October-hatch-along 2019

I like to write the expected hatch date on the eggs when I set them in the incubator, I incubate in my Old cabinet incubator and hatch in my brinsea. So when I am in the swing of things I will be setting new eggs every weekend and moving the next batch to hatch into lockdown on wed, hatch for the weekend clean and repeat. I have a few due tomorrow with my next planned hatch for new years

There is a difference between hatchery DP and well bred, most hatcheries lean twords egg numbers cuz that's what most of their customers get excited about, that being said freedom ranger hatchery has some new Hampshire reds that are supposed to lean heavy twords meat.
Personally I am working with some white Plymouth rocks and Delawares that I am pleased with. I also have some red broilers that i hatched some eggs from crossed with my Naked necks. I have been keeping only the best biggest cockrels for breeding and watching how fast they mature. Slow growing? Nope soup. Keep the best and eat the rest
I am very pleased with my Delaware too. She's my biggest chicken breed next to the JG. I can't wait to see how her chicks come out since they're crossed with JG. I hope they're good meat birds.

Well we don't have Delaware here.. I couldn't find New Hampshire too, though I've heard the breed before.

What breeds ARE available there? @Compost King has a thread where he explains how he's raising CX in attempt to breed hens with non CX. Here's a link to the thread, but maybe there's a breed you have there you could try to cross. Honestly, there are a lot of other dual purpose breeds out there

And then there were nine. Just set up my bator for first lockdown - the three ODs are due probably Saturday (day 19). Placed all the eggs on their sides but clustered the six remaining EEs under the heat unit and moved the ODs to a corner away from it. Filled all water channels to bring humidity to 50-60 (ODs do better w lower humidity, I'm told). Pulled two other EE eggs that didn't candle well earlier and checked them - no veins, mostly clear, eggtopsied and was confirmed no development/very early quitters. Will check temps again and adjust positions when the bator restabilizes, probably this evening. Second lockdown will be Monday-ish (day 18 for the EEs) after removing what I hope will be three live OD chicks.

Good luck! :pop

I tossed all of the Silkie eggs from the incubator tonight. No luck with this shipped batch. 4 were cracked and began to smell. One started to develop long before shipped, and didn’t make it. And the others didn’t develop.

The shipping box was beat up when I got it. However, had the eggs been double boxed, it might not have been as much of a problem. I have not had any luck with eggs not double boxed.

No more hatches planned until spring.
