I would if I needed to, I would not hesitate - but I currently have no need to do so, and haven't in a long while. I've been wondering if we should rename this practice, as it seems to horrify new chicken keepers...
Trim flight feathers
Trim feathertips
It's not like declawing cats, folks! It's somewhere in between a haircut & trimming your dog's nails.
No reason for it. Mine either free range or stay in a fully enclosed run. And I’d rather that they be able to get away from predators when free ranging.
I have never had the need to, but if I did need to I would. I free range and have a fully covered and enclosed run, so there’s been no issues with escapees.
I only clip if I have to, like if I have a hen that has a death wish and keeps trying to sleep in trees at night, or when I'm settling in some new birds that can fully fly, like my Aztec ducks.
Don't clip wings. Have not had a problem with them flying where they don't belong so see no need to. Plus if something did get in the yard, Id want them to be able to get away as easily as possible. I have them food trained anyways so a couple tongue clicks and a handfull of, well it don't matter, if they think I got some goodies, they come running from the 4 corners of the earth
I clip the wings of any that are really bad about wandering. I have had less need to clip wings with a better run setup, so haven't clipped any during the past several months.
