Official BYC Poll: Where Do You Buy Your Feed From & Why?

Does anyone buy from chewy.com? I just made my first order with them. Our local feed and seed doesn't carry chicken feed (I know, crazy!); I'm lucky to find maybe a small bag of dried mealworms there sometimes. So I've been driving 20 minutes to the TSC, but lately, their selection of chicken feed is so limited I can't find what I want.

So chewy.com is my next foray into my quest for a good supplier. My first order with them was a 50-lb bag of layer crumbles for $20.

I use to buy cat litter and cat food from them. They had free delivery over a certain amount spent. I no longer have a cat so I cancelled my subscription with them. But I liked them when I used them

To those who use dumor feed. Pay close attention to the layer and keep an eye out for green specks on the pellets ( mold)
Usually on the ends where its snapped

I hate Dumor feed for chickens. We buy it for our goats which is fine and they love it. The chickens hate that brand and the scratch is overly dusty

Thats awesome you can support local. I am on the other side. My local feed store charges a SIGNIFICANT amount more than tractor supply for the same product. :-\ I have stopped going to my local store for most things now because of it.

That's unfortunate. Out of all the feed stores/pet stores in my area, there is one that charges about $5 more a bag for feed, so I don't frequent it, but in a pinch I'll go there because it's conveniently located and generally has most items I'd need on hand.

We buy all our feed from a small local business. It was run out of a shipping container, but has expanded since. It is one of the only local, small businesses left in our town, and we'd really like them to stay in business.

I used to buy my dog food from Chewy. BUT when Chewy got in bed with the HSUS, I stopped. (As did pretty much everyone else I know.)

I buy from Chewy.com, but that's mainly cause of the pandemic and wanting to go out as little as possible. I've found their feed to work better than the stuff I was getting from TSC for fermenting (I buy both crumble and scratch grains at the same time and ferment together). If I had a Co-op nearby I'd be over the moon, but the nearest one is over an hour away....

I buy mine from a guy in town that has 2 semi trailers with feed. He now carries my dogs food too which make it even better. (And for $8 per bag cheaper than anywhere else in store OR online. ) One of the benefits of living in a tiny 500ish person town. It is self serve, honor system. (You write down what you got and how many on a piece of paper he has in one of the trailers. Then he sends you a bill at the end of the month.) This way I also don't have 2 hours just in driving time to go somewhere else! Which is even more helpful in the winter when it is snowing. "Town" is about 30 minutes round trip.

TSC 100% they have everything I need, good brands, for where I live chicken food is about $20 a bag. Theirs is 15-16 dollars a bag, I’d shop their for food before anywhere else. But I buy dog food at Walmart.

I use TSC for the majority of my feed....but I also order Barley and Modesto Milling feed from other suppliers. I give my flock all whole grain feeds and a pellet for hens...they eat well and have variety. I spend alot...but it keeps them healthy and looking good. Im fairly new to raising chickens and I know nutrition is extremely important. They get whole corn, sunflowers, oats, flaxseed, barley mealworms as a regular part of their regimen. I also ferment Oats, Barley and Corn and rotate those giving thrm to my flock every other day. They hsve Modesto milling feed in their hanging feeder in the coop 24/7 . They free range my yard usually every other day....and of course they get treats like flock blocks and yogurt and oatmeal.
