Official Squatch Watchers

Like I said, I haven't tried it myself, but starter fluid is almost pure ether, and ether was a commonly used anesthetic in human Operating Rooms for many years so I don't *think* it causes any discomfort.

I need to write another blog post. I'm thinking about doing an in-depth slaughter post with pictures and showing all the different tricks/hacks I've learned from different sources and combine them in one piece. I originally thought that I would just reference other sources since they cover "everything". However, I found some hacks that make the process easier for novice, DIY butchers and I think these might be nice to document. Most of the sources I found helpful try to make the carcass as close to a store bought bird as possible. I find it annoying and time wasting to do that so I sacrifice the "look" of the carcass for the ease of processing.

I guess that makes sense. I didn’t think about the ether, more about the smell.

There are two methods I have read about:

1. Hold an ether soaked rag over the chicken's face while you hold her in your lap.

2. Place the chicken and the ether soaked rag in an enclosed container like a tote box or cooler.

TwoCrows uses the first method. She is also a project manager and could probably talk you through the process if you message her

I was reading on a post from 2007 where someone did this for a large bird and it took a long time and whole can of fluid. Not sure if they tried a box or face though. I bet it works great on chicks.

I don’t know what we’ll do. Hubby is almost home. Sesame is drinking, but I know she is uncomfortable. I will let her rest tonight and re-evaluate tomorrow.

Yes, I think the container method works best for chicks. The rag method is probably better for adult birds.

BUT there is no need to decide right away. Both of you should get some rest. :hugs:hugs:hugs Wish I could do more than send digital hugs :hit
