Some people collect them or buy them to match certain outfits. Personally i think it dates back to hunter gatherer days! People used to walk and search for things to eat all day, sometimes without much success. Now food is easier to come by mostly, we hunt for other things to get the thrill of a successful hunt. Same with bidding on auctions or buying stuff from tv shows. The thrill of success. It is not as much about the shoes as it is the buying and perhaps showing off to others, look i found these perfect shoes!

Sometimes you buy a pair to match that one specific outfit and so you only wear them once in a blue moon. At least that's what I do. My shoes...boots in particular....are a sore subject in my house. My DH thinks I need an intervention. My name is Suzi and I'm addicted to boots and shoes
 
Hi Suzi, i am addicted to animals, buying seeds, buying fabric, stencils, tools... plants...books...i gave up Pepsi and coke, and making ceramics but i regret the ceramics and may start that again.
ETA, If you saw my work sneakers you would scream in disgust. I wear the heck out of them. When they fall apart, i buy a new pair of going to town sneakers and my old town sneakers become work sneakers. My dress shoes live in a box somewhere.
