@CapricornFarm I saw this neat in ground green house. They dug down and used RR ties to hold the dirt back. Then put a roof on it. You could use cattle panels for that. Dig 5ft down or 2-3 RR tie deep. Then once everything is started they pulled the roof back. No replanting.

And that's a Harry Potter creature! Super cute!

That is an interesting idea but i think we would have to rent a backhoe to dig here. The soil is mostly clay, hubby has a bad back and i am 60. I dug a 13x13 koi pond in FL in my younger days, but just filling my raised beds with sand, manure and soil is taxing and i have to do a bit at a time. Nice part would be the constant 50 degrees under ground, like our crawl space.

I want to do that for a root cellar. We have a bit of room under our house, but we'd have to do a TON of stuff to get it into cellar shape. It would be easier just to start with a freshly dug hole and go from there. I NEED to get a pic of the little hobbit door that leads to under our house. It's so cute! Everyone except my mom and DHs mom have to bend over to walk in it.

My husband attached styrofoam above the door of our crawl space because more than one person has bashed their heads on it. Not me, hubby and the contractor. Wish i had seen that!
 
To those wondering what that is, it's called a niffler. Yes, it was in the Harry Potter series, and is also in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Basically, it's a magical platypus-type creature that cannot resist collecting precious metals and gems, and has a marsupial pouch that seems to have an endless capacity to hold what is put in it. Plus, it's totally adorable. I got it at Barnes and Nobles (for those of you who are trying to imperious me into sending it to you).
