I lost my first 2 boys in a very similar manner. Everything was fine all day. It was very hot out but they get ice water in those conditions.
Went to do bed checks and both boys were dead on the floor. They all like to roost in the damn rafters so my best guess was maybe they had a little tiff over territory and heat stroked. One was right under the roost the other was over behind the waterer.
Purpleish combs like you saw but not a mark on them. I looked them over really well to see if they had fought. Nothing. I even considered poison but I had young chicks at the time and no one else even seemed sick. Didn't lose anyone else like that. No idea what it was.
I did install a screen door after that to give them better ventilation on hot days.
I went to lowes a year or two ago, it was 34*... It's an hour away... Got home it was 90* 7 dead birds. Sometimes it just happens. Hoping for the best.
Woohoo! Congrats!
Hi squatchers! Missed you! I have been spending my free time in the run chick watching. Here’s a pic from today’s group nap

Morning peeps.
Taking a little break from BYC to study for the AP's and Regents, but I need some advice.
We're incubating 9 button quail and a goose egg(long story) in a farm innovators incubator. It held the temps beautifully, until Tuesday night, when it decided to flip out. The goose egg literally was hot to the touch. The infrared thermometer read 104* on the shell. The button quail eggs are technically in lockdown. One of the other teachers at school has this really nice incubator(like the Brinsea mini advance, only less digital) that he's bringing in today. My main question is do you guys think the eggs will survive? The temps are fairly steady now(but I still don't trust the darn thing) but only after yo-yoing for two days. After the first initial scare, it got down to 80* last night, and up to 102* several times(based on three additional thermometers and the infrared.) Also, do you think I should move the quail eggs, even though today is day 16? There are no pips yet... But that could mean they died... Arg!
Don't give up hope, they are incredibly strong. Do candle and then best of luck. change or not to change your choice, I'd probably move to the brinsea, just because that's what I use.
Ok, I've tried using a vet wrap band around its legs and taping its feet. It now has its feet under its body but they are still VERY far forward. It is doing better with trying to toddle about. Its umbilical looks fine now. The chick has been hatched for about 24 hours now. I don't want to put it with my other chicks in the brooder just yet. So it is in the incubator for now. Is a little nutridrench ok if I'm still not feeding and watering?
Rae, so sorry
Hoping for the best...Smuv, good news.... Wish i'd have such news. It will all work out in the end ...
Evening folks
This is me being irresponsible... I'm done with adult hood for this evening and will face it again in the am... now I'm going to spend time with my chicken peeps.
What's a holland? I know about holland rabbits but you aren't hatching rabbits.
