Official Squatch Watchers

Ok my face hurts now.

Tended the birds.
Minus 3 in the coops. Wind chill minus 15. There is humidity with it so it felt colder than the minus 25 chill a day ago.

I’d literally die at your house

These cold snaps never last long. :hugs

Layers, scarves, boots and gloves!

So... The saga of the neighbor continues.

They've completed the exterior frame of the house and put the roof on, all during the rainy weather we have this time of year. That means that the whole thing has been wet to the point of they'll be lucky to not have issues with mold. The window flashing is only on the sides and bottom of the windows, not along the top, so yeah, they'll have issues there. They haven't had a building inspector out to check on it since before the foundation was poured, and the property owner has only been out once since they started building.

Well, Friday they decided to dig the trench to pay the power conduit. Not only did they not tell us they were digging, but they also we digging on our property in a place that I would not have let them dig. In the process, they dug through the power line feeding the entire neighborhood :rant... With a backhoe :barnie. Tomorrow I get to call the water company back and tell them that the water in the trench is not frozen, which it should be with the current temps, meaning they did, in fact, damage a water line, most likely ours since our water pressure has decreased since then.

I'm not furious anmore, karma is gonna get them. They are getting fined and a bill from the power company, so I'm just helping karma out by getting with the water company and letting them know who to contact about paying for the repairs. No, I'm not happy about it, but the fact is, the guy with the backhoe is lucky he didn't get electrocuted The next thing he would have hit would have been the gas line, so we were lucky that the neighborhood only lost power for 5 hours. Things could have been a thousand times worse.
Oh wow. That's horrible. I hope if they did hit a water line it's before your meter. What a mess.. people are the worst. It sounds like these are the most horrible construction people ever. You might even contact the BBB about them.

:frowGood morning folks. Just saw this. I better go grocery shopping to prepare for her arrival...

Jealous, though it was warm yesterday... but all rain. I just want my feet to be dry and warm.

:smacklove ya but...C'mon!! Why oh why do I continue to live in Ohio? It is so soggy and damp here. We desperately need some sunshine to dry things out
I don't know either and same. My apt called me Wed about the trail of mud leading to my apt... I need to make sure I take off my boots before I go into the building now. I cannot wait for this mud to dry up.

Well, come on then.

Bring a sweater though. It’ll be sort of chilly again by the weekend. But next week looks like spring again.

My old guy neighbor Ray was tilling his big garden yesterday.
That’s always a good sign.
I’ll have to stop and talk to him in the next few days.
He’s a good gardener. Used to be a farmer. He knows what’s what.

Talk about climate change though....
5 years ago, I had my garden planted by Lincoln’s birthday. (Feb. 12).
It’s gotten later each year, and not because I was dillydallying - the temps just weren’t there yet.
Wow. Around mid feb is when we usually get a week of fake spring before winter comes in for another round.

Birds are tended. Everyone is looking good.

Cannot give the wet feed since it will freeze before they can eat it.
I will be feeding Crooky by herself. She HAS to have the wet feed since her beak is, well.....crooky.
:hmm

Laundry is running, bathroom is cleaned, indoor birds and cat are tended.
:caf
I will be cleaning cupboards I guess.

Not good at sitting still.
My apt is a total wreck if you want to come over and clean it while I'm at work...

That's the worst thing I've ever seen. That poor bird. Reminds me of Jaiden.. I'm not sure I ever got an egg from her & she did the waddle thing too.

What the h3ll! I'm getting 1 maybe 2 eggs a day. Had a Marans laying and she quit. Egret was laying and she stopped too!
I got a bunch of spoiled slackers. 17 girls out there that all be at or past POL. 1 egg today. 1!
14 girls & I'm getting 3-4 a day. I have 5 colored egg layers I'm certain aren't laying anything. Not sure about the others. I know the 2 pullets are laying..

Serious question :
WOULD IT HAVE LOPPED OFF THE CHICKS HEAD? or just broken it’s little neck?
Because now I’m picturing the little head fumbling out onto the floor and the dog eating it....

I couldn't do it - I'd have to take to the vet and pay to have it done.:hit
I took 1 to the vet & they did it. I had someone come over and take care of another. I had several chicks die and I held most of them when they went. I didn't need to cull any of them, but I probably should have, but I didn't know any better.

Aaaaahhhhhhh. See? You just hit the nail on the head

Smart people would follow the directions to a T and have the same fantastic results that Nunny had, but
others might not be good readers, or be a “distracted reader” and just skim.... try to save some money...substitute supplies... eyeball things ... burn down their coop, their house.... kill their family...

I can see the other side of this too.
I agree... but if they thought it was a liability, they could have put a warning on it to be sure to follow instructions. I didn't get a chance to read it.. if she stated in the article, that while it could be toxic at certain temps, that as long as the instructions were followed the temps shouldn't reach above so many degrees and would be safe for use when temps are below zero. I mean, this isn't something a person should use when it's just hovering around freezing or for a long term heating source.
In either case, the site could have contacted her directly and said that they cannot allow her article b/c they deem it unsafe b/c of [specific reasons] and then she'd have the opportunity to discuss the issues at hand and maybe find a compromise.

I do understand where they are coming from. I would have felt terrible if someone tried making one, did it improperly and killed their birds. Then messaged me telling me it's all my fault.
It would have been nice if discussion have happened first. Then the decision of it's dangerous could have been made.
I feel slightly personally attacked because people reported the article instead of asking and basically said I was an idiot who must have killed my birds.
This is a good point. If it was that unsafe, and seeing that you had used it, why would no one TELL you that? Maybe someone had commented on your article about it, but they were deleted when the article was removed.

I'm hoping that no one reports my culling article. It is the sort of thing people need to know how to do, even if it isn't exactly palatable to some.

I was thinking I needed to wait until I had a chick that needed to be culled, but I think that would have been too graphic, especially for the audience I'm targeting. I think the "Peep" bunny worked pretty well.
You could always do the demo w/ a live chick, wrap it up and show how it'd look in the towel, how to hold it, and how to find the neck line when wrapped, but don't actually cull it.

I've culled a few and held others while they died. The first and last have been the worst for me. Not that any of them were what I wanted to do.
I'd like to make a gas chamber. (Not my heater) But a large container I can put them in and walk away to come back and find them seemingly asleep.

Yes I made a bad joke.
When we gas animals we use my mom's SUV, put the cage under a tarp and wrap the tarp around the exhaust pipe & put some boards around the edge of the tarp to hold it in place. Then run the car for a while.. The animal falls asleep & dies. You could probably do something similar with a rubbermaid tote and some hose, though you could probably find something a little more classy.. like Chicky's helium thing w/ the same premise.

Hope it’s not someone who gets paid.

@FlyingNunFarm , in pure sincerity DH said next chicken death we have he’s cremating it for me in our outdoor fireplace...
and all I could think of was the neighbors going “Mmmmmm! :drool Stacey’s roasting chicken!”
I thought of doing the same thing w/ Odin, but didn't for the same reason. We buried him... didn't want the kids to find out.

Good morning. Well....last night part of my run was a flooded mud pit. (Weird thing is the sides are tarped and it has a roof ) This morning it is frozen solid. When I did chores last night it was 59 degrees. This morning its 22. What the taters!!
Is your run on the wrong part of a hill? I have 4x4's around my small run and it will flood b/c there's no where for the water to escape, so if you did the same thing, that might be part of the issue.

Haha yes . It definitely dries out my skin. Just a few more weeks and we will be through the worst part. In March the snow drops and Lenton Rose will start to peek out. Anything green is exciting
And the ground hog said we're in for an early spring so there's that... b/c rodents can predict the weather...

I guess I could, but I need a chick first.

I need to get hatching at some point this year.

Know about "fake spring" we seem to have that every year

I'm still recovering from the Tangled ballet on Wed. I've decided that next year I'm taking that day off work b/c it was ridiculous trying to get stuff done. I had left work early, but I didn't get much of what I had planned done. I had even taken off Monday too to finish up painting.

The tower on the left was about 10 ft high. There is a part where in the movie where Rapunzel pushes Mother Gothel out the window of the tower to her death, the kids wanted to actually push her out the window of the tower... that did not happen.

Those lanterns... it turned out great, but they drove me insane. It was supposed to be super easy, but it was such a pain to get them put together straight & not wrinkled. We took some of them and attached them to a dowel rod w/ fishing line & put string lights in them & the younger kids twirled around them like the lanterns were floating. It turned out pretty great. The person who designed the sets is amazing, I helped with painting, but she did the detail work & telling me what to do.. And then it all got tossed into the trash, except the tower, the barrel, and a few other things.

That does look like a lot of work!

It turned out great though
