My girls are about 5 months old & just started laying a few weeks ago. They seem to "waste" alot on the ground but I could be feeding them too much also! LOL! Would Pellets be better for them?

I prefer pellets because there is less dust in the bag compared to crumbles (dust=waste). Make sure you have the feeder hung so the trough is at the same height as their backs. If the feeder is too low, they can and will try to scratch at the feed, which causes a lot of spillage / wasted feed. I had to raise mine a couple of inches because they were scratching it out of the feeder, now there is almost no wasted feed. If you do decide to switch over to pellets, do it gradually by mixing crumbles and pellets together, adding more pellets than crumbles each time you fill the feeder. Layer feed should be given free choice, no limitations...(you can't over feed, but treats should be limited). Good luck.
