Pigeon Talk

Baby squab #2 has hatched! :jumpy:woot My DW we t in this morning when I was, at work and saw it. Boomer was just chucking the old shell out! It was still wet so it must have only just hatched! Can't wait to get home now!

:celebrate:wee I love Boomer!
Long live King Boomer, Queen Beau, and the little prince and princess!

@h2oratt Harris Hawks. They're fun to study. Quite the athlete. Their agility is unsurpassed in their region. I've seen them take down flying songbirds. They prefer rabbits and ground squirrels though. That requires work flushing them from the underbrush. They live in groups of three or more.

@CCUK Yes. I've been published in national geographic, even. :wee

My grizzled pair is talking this morning with the rooster crows. (My temporary loft is next to my bedroom window) I'm hoping they start laying soon so I can join the ranks of successful breeding.

@Qwerty3159 how's your girl this morning? Eating yet?

Here's a video I took after feeding her. When she stands still and relaxes the head tilting isn't as bad. She's getting better at balancing with it but it has not gone away.

Kinda looks like what we call ‘star gazing’ in chicks. Such a pretty girl.

I'm sure they are 10,s since they slipped on EZ. Must take into consideration that those pigeons have feathered feet. 8 mm would make the feathers more deformed on the legs.

I definitely ordered 10s this time, because that’s what the site recommended for Oriental Frills. It does look huge for such small birds, but with the way their foot is, and with the feathers, I think it will be fine, I don’t think they could get it off, but it won’t be tight. Would being too loose cause any problems?

Yay!! Will be interesting to see how much faster these guys grow compared to the chicks that hatched recently. :)

I am wondering if special formula is needed. Wouldn't the same mixture I use to hand raise babies work? That is a mix of chicken pellets and water, blended to the consistency of ketchup?

It would work nutritionally, but I can tell you from experience getting a mixture like that to go down a tube is a nightmare, lol, unless you blend it up pretty good and make it pretty liquidy.

This should give ideas on these beauties.

Whilst we're talking raptors here's a clip of a goshawk. I think it has been posted before. It shows how small a gap they can fit through. This is what our precious pidgies have to contend with!

Cool videos. Scary for us though, for sure.
I caught a hawk on my home security camera video taking one of my baby ducklings. It was fast!
