Pigeon Talk

Thinking ahead, if these three are lost, I want to up my numbers. I was thinking about maybe letting squeak sit on her next clutch. She has white as well as the blue and looks beautiful. What would the chances of her having babies that also have white? And, she is paired with her father.....is that OK?!
Doo is out of a pied hen and Blue bar cock and he has white flights. Mated with another pied hen the offspring have a lot of white, see last pics.:)

Slim to none. :)

I have found that unless both parents are white, there offspring rarely have much of any white.I

About them paired, I personally don't like it, but it's up to you. It's not bad, as far as genetics go, but it doesn't seem right in my opinionion...

Does boomer have any eggs comming?

Well, I know HE doesn't. :p
I may let them anyway. I know the father, Papa1, comes from good stock and squeak went missing with boomer frequently at a young age and has turned into a good strong flier. I may let Boomer and Beau have another clutch but one of the other pigeons is constantly hassling them in the nest. So I'd have to address that first.

Ok. That is a very good point you have made. white flights... It seems to be a very dominant gene. I see ferals with it, many of my birds have them. I wonder why it might be so dominant?

Lucky! I love quakers. And blue is my favorite color on them. How old is he? Can I pleaseeeee have a picture? :p

He'll be three on July 6th :)

He doesn't really do 'holding still', lol, so I don't have a lot of good pictures. Here's when he was about four months old. I have more but I'll have to find them:

Oh, so pretty!

Do you recommend them, or a cockatiel for a first parrot? I'm guessing cockatiel. How loud is it? Or, should I ask, is it constantly "chating"...

Still no sign of my missing 3 pigeons. :( I'm sure if they trapped somewhere else I would have had a call by now. I fear the worst but still hoping for the best.

:hugs I'm still hoping for the best too. :fl

My first parrot was a cockatiel. They are pretty different. Cockatiels I would say are 'less maintenance' in a way. Mine was always fine to just sit and be with me, and that was good enough for him. Actually I've had two - one was an elderly rescue and he only lived a few months after I got him. But he too was the same way.

Fizz always wants to be doing something. He wants a toy, or a treat, or direct attention. They're like toddlers in a way. Sometimes he's content to just chill, but mostly he wants activity.

They can be loud; all parrots can be. I would say Fizz is definitely louder than my cockatiels ever were. He's not always talking, but they do like to scream just for fun - Fizz has a bell and he likes to knock it around while screaming for a bit once or twice a day. You have to be okay with that; parrots are going to scream.

But most of the time he's not really too loud. He says a lot of human words and does a lot of talking like that. Well, to me; he's really shy and doesn't like to talk to other humans with his words, lol.

Oh, and his alarm call. It's hard to describe it, but it's grating, and loud, and I HATE it. It just really grates on you, is the best way I can put it. Luckily he doesn't do it often, just when something is happening that he really doesn't like or that he thinks is a threat to him. Which is not often. Actually I found a video of a quaker doing it.

They need a lot of mental stimulation - lots of time out of the cage, lots of new toys, etc. They're very smart. This goes for both cockatiels and quakers. Fizz has special enrichment toys where he has to solve puzzles to get a treat, and those will keep him busy for awhile.

You are thinking in people terms. No !!! ,,,, in people,,, you don't marry in the family.
In chicken genetics , which would apply to probably pigeons as well, male parent to female offspring is done all the time, with success in breeding to good results.
Animals do not comply with same morals as people. I don't think morals apply to animals. I think morals are only for humans. :)

Frodo and Sam have been out having a look around the last few days.
I don't have them responding well to a feed call yet because they're so used to free feeding (they left the nest when I was away for about a week and had a gravity feeder up) and I just started them on a routine again this week but I was impressed that they both moved through the bob wires without hesitation their first try.
