~Pro's And Con's Of Feathered Feet~

I have Cochins...

I honestly see no purpose in feathered feet other than for looks. Feathered feet look amazing until they get muddy. I live in an area that has red clay so you can imagine what happens when it rains and you have a White Cochin.

I'm not sure if the feathers provide any type of benefit to the chicken like keeping their legs warmer because my chicken can't talk :gig

My Cochins seem like they have a harder time in the summer and that's probably due to the over-abundance of feathers that they have.

Here's Chicken Little my white Cochin. Her feathers are permanently stained by red clay! This was the day I was taming my cockerels by using scratch.

I raise Brahmas.
I free range mine so they don’t get their foot feathers dirty too often. only when the pen around their coop gets muddy after a lot of rain.
I usually scatter straw and leaves around the pen to keep their feet off the mud.

This is my free range area... My chickens have a free range fenced in enclosure, it's to keep out dogs and cats that aren't mine. It's winter right now so there is no grass, but usually this is all green in the warmer months.
