Hopefully Abby will be happy to see them tomorrow and things will go well from here on.

You did all you could do.
congrats on the babies, when does Abby come home? I bet she wants her babies!!

We had to have a emergency C-Section on my cat it was over $900! I gave my mom money to get her fixed (I was middle school/highschool at the time) mom didnt get it done before the cat got prego again, that darn cat ended up having like 3 litters! She nursed them all after the CSection.

Mom now breeds blue heelers, shes got pups now. But one of the girls she bred, bad girl, she ended up having a CSection but she was really bad, she wouldnt feed the babies or go near them unless you forced her, held her down and pet her so they could nurse, mom had to supplement them a little bit, but always made the momma dog lay down and let her pups eat as well. That dog for spayed.

Her Daisy dog, the one with pups now, shes had 3 litters now, the first there were 5-6 cant remember, the second was a accident, she receltly had pups weaned and needed her rest, well mom went out of town and I put my neices pull ups on her, so that Cody the male couldnt get her, well some how he did, she had ONE puppy! Just ONE. I thought that was weird! Then this little there are 9 puppies, WOW, I just happened to be there for that connection too. HORRABLE!
We were HA at her house, just getting ready to leave, mom was out of town when I go outside to put something in my car and what do you know the dogs are stuck, of course I didnt want her to get knocked up again so soon, so I yelled NO NO NO and went up to them hoping they would seperate.... NOT..... I tried the whole cold water, NOTHING, begged her to let go called my mom she said theres nothing you can do, Daisy will let go when shes ready, poor Cody just a whimpering

They wre standing in the MIDDLE of the DRIVEWAY so we couldnt LEAVE, so hubby and I had to PICK THEM UP and move them over into the lawn so we could leave! Just a few minutes before we left, she let him go, the poor guy, I didnt know they got so HUGE! Rofl

Anyway, so glad to hear your pups are doing well and Abby is ok!

Oh Dear Allanah, Im so sorry that you had to go through this stress.
I had a horrible feeling when you werent on here that night/morning and was hoping that abby would be ok.
I dont know what to say but i really hope everything turns out for all of you and we are here for you.
I hope she comes home very soon, have a wonderful time with them all.

I picked Abby up at the vet this morning Sunday, so she has only been away from them for like 24 hours. She is doing beautifully. The puppies were little angels last night. I got up with them around 3 am but did not feed them, just got them back to sleep. They had a huge breakfast and then poopie and then slept, just dream babies. Abby was so excited to see them it was too sweet. She laid right down and licked them and rolled them around. They are nursing now and snuggling with mama. What an experience. All this was $900. Can you believe that? Abby has a huge cut down the middle of her. She is a trooper. I will post pics of them later.

So relieved to hear she was happy to see the babies. I was more than a little worried that she wouldn't want anything to do with them. I've had some not good experiances with cows not wanting anything to do with their babies when they've had trouble calving or been seperated from them. I'm glad you took her in when you did. I know 900.00 is a big hit...at least it would be to me, but I guess when you look at the alternative it's hopefully easier to take. Are these purebred so you can get some of your money back that way?...Or now days the puppies that used to be a woops for a breeder are called designer puppies and they go for big bucks!!!!

In response to Terra's post about the accidental mating...

The male dog ejaculates within seconds after penetrating the female. A tie is not even really necessary to ensure pregnancy - it's more of proof that you had a good breeding.

The 'tie' just ensures that his sperm gets a head start on any other males tha may be waiting around. That's how you can have more than one daddy of a litter of pups. The tie happens because the female's opening is a bit smaller than the inside space, and the base of the male's organ swells after he ejaculates and so he can't get out again until the swelling goes down. Ties usually last anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes.

Anyway, trying to separate dogs once they are tied is cruel and pointless. The sperm has already been released and it well on it's way to fertilize the eggs before the tie is even established. Forcing the tie apart will not prevent pregnancy at all, but CAN cause lasting damage to both the girl and male dog, not to mention the fact it is VERY painful for both parties to be forced apart, or at the very minimal not fun - can you imagine being in that position and someone throwing cold water on you - it's just miserable and won't help the situation at all.

The only reason to try to separate dogs mating is if the tie has lasted an excessive amount of time - like more than 30 minutes. In that case, the best way to accomplish it is to push the male dog against the female and hold him firmly 'in' for a minute or two. Not having the dog pulling back against the tie can allow the swelling of the dogs organ to reduce and allow the tie to break.

Once a girl dog has been bred, there are 'morning after' pills that can be given to prevent implantation of the puppies, but they can have some pretty bad side effects and it is usually considered safer - especially if you plan on using the dog again for breeding - to just let the pregnancy proceed than try to stop it with the drugs.

The sure fire way to end a pregnancy is to spay a female who has been accidentally bred - the best option if it is an accidental breeding and you had not planned on breeding the dog in the first place.

Okay, here she is, proud new mama, she worked very hard for these babies. 2 males -1 yellow
1 chocolate, 3 female-1 yellow and 2 chocolate AKC labs.

What a sweet pic - she really went through the wringer for those pups.

That story is why anyone who is breeding their dogs with any moderate level of correct care and attention is not making killer dollars off of the pups.

Just when you think you are going to break even on a litter, then you get one like this that costs into the 1000s in vet bills by the time you have those babies ready to go into new homes.

Enjoy those puppies while you can - I always enjoyed them immensely, but was also glad to breathe a sigh of relief that my work was done when they were ready to go home with their new owners!
