Ribh's D'Coopage

Oh, I gave it a jolly good scare ~ & just so it knows who owns this yard I had a mass break out mid afternoon with the majority of my girls hurtling here, there & everywhere! Silly girls run to me as soon as I put in an appearance :hmm & I pop them back over the fence. It was hot here today but their run is the coolest part of the yard ~ & where Soda headed was where we saw the snake ~ one of our more venomous & aggressive ones. :( They had watermelon treats & the run hosed down too but give a chook an inch...:lau

:gig

And now I’m having Steve Irwin flashbacks... but editing in the chickens running amok. I think your girls certainly see you as a safe place and like their rooster. The free range girls here would be like that with me, being as they were all ones I had worked with extensively. It caused some tension between Sammy and I for a while but we worked it out. No free ranging in their future again for a bit though, not with the Owl still lurking.

Today it was perched atop the barn doors at 2 in the afternoon; I think it’s missing it’s snacks and was trying to avoid the high winds and rain we were having. Yesterday Sammy and the girls made a break for it while I was feeding them (not liking the little teenagers or the meat tractor much) and the Barn was the first place they ran to! That’s a Hard No right now, so I’m going to have to be very careful about even daytime escapes. I suppose I’ll finally have to get around to fixing that gate to help slow them down some if they do get out again.

Funny girls. I'm not sure my girls would take kindly to a young rooster now...:hmm They're pretty spoilt, despite the fact I never wanted lap chickens.

It's been one of those days here. I was doing the evening feed which includes Lottie on my knee & each Campine getting a hand full of crumble :idunnowhen Kirby decided to get on the coop roof truss & peer down through the wire yowling. Immediate consternation. Lottie vacated her spot & Tuppence tried to land there instead! Bedlam. Then Lottie saw Tuppence was eating her dinner & arrived back wanting to know what I thought I was doing? :barnie

Tuppence spends a lot of time out of the run but these days she is easily caught & I often tuck her under my arm while I do whatever I've stepped outside to do before popping her back. She's such a funny little chookie! She loves being up high & getting to go places she's not normally allowed.

That monitor is a scary thought especially since you cannot do anything about him. Are they fast enough to chase down a hen or do they need to surprise the hen?
They are fast enough to chase down a hen :( but they are lazy ~ carrion eaters rather than hunters. They are supposed to be smart enough to count to 6. What I do know is they will climb trees to rob nests & knowing they're round is one reason I don't leave eggs in the nests. Ha'penny lays in some odd places too. I was emptying out the old mulch bag & found an egg in the last of the old mulch.

Not quite ready yet, but getting close. Son and his family will be joining us. How about you? Sorry I haven't been around much, work has kept me crazy busy.
I've been quiet too. I don't like our heat & worry about the girls once the thermometer starts climbing, the wind drops out & the humidity kicks in. :(

Well, I've done the present buying. Trifle & Pav will have to wait till Christmas eve to make & I may rethink the pav if the heat really kicks in as it will go sticky & I don't like sticky pav. :D May depend on the girl. She likes her pav & can't make it in Chile. One son & his little family will join us @ some point but YD is working ~ the joys of being a professional singer~ & we won't see our middle son till the new year.

They're native so I'm not actually allowed to kill it. This was only about 21/2 feet ~ unlike the 8' monster that used to hang here. You are right. They can be terribly vicious & aggressive. I don't keep food in the run but we are one of the few water sources for anything & everything... :( We found a brown snake on the south side of the house last week so just now I am less than happy about our wild life...
A brown! Uh oh... What did you do?
