Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

What is the best way to pick up a chicken? Now I’m curious!
I pick them up from below so they stand on my hands, which is something Shad suggested I try. It's been really good but of course, is much easier at night time when they're on the roost already.

It works well for some of our hens but others don't get that they can put their weight on our hands and will struggle especially with my smaller hands.

The old French ‘hole-in-the-ground’ toilets are even better/ more hygenic than some of the Greek toilets where you use a bin for the toilet paper (because the drain is too narrow for toilet paper 🧻).
In my opinion a hole which will not have your bottom in contact with dirty surfaces but only your shoes is far more hygienic than a modern toilet that isn't very clean. And I won't tell you what I think of whoever invented scrubbing your behind with paper and throwing the thing away in drinkable water.

Wiping has a long history; there is written evidence that they used leaves in ancient times. In India they combine the British tradition of a sit-down loo with a sort of short hose instead of loo roll, so you can wash without a separate bidet; clever adaption which works well there. Here of course we'd all freeze our arses off with a system like that! :gig:lau

All my bantams prefer to stand on my hands & be carried that way. My standards prefer the firm hold around the wings & across the breast.
