I'd defer to your judgment. Without being around Games much I'm not sure which would interest me more.

Still not sure I'm ready for them though.
Havoc knows his fowl better than any of us adding our 2 cents, but for an amateur like myself, I like calm confident birds. I really like the stags that will walk right up to me. Some of them can be real talkers and treat their ladies nice. They still won't play nice with other birds, but are a lot easier for me to work with.

SDM, the hen hatched 14 out of 15. She is a great setter, but a lousy mother. I went out last night to check them and she was back up in the nest bucket and the babies were on the floor underneath... She has done this before. Overall she does a nice job with the chicks. Nothing messes with her!

14/15 es good
Hens do that a lot.. I think its a natural instinct to roost where she hatched them...
I keep my nesting buckets on the ground for that reason. Its not as clean but I think it works out a little better if she is going to raise them herself.

Or maybe move the bucket to ground after she hatches them... or take her chicks and raise them yourself

I've seen some hens do a incredible job raising the chicks, I had a 5 month old pullet adopt some chicks one time and do a awesome job raising them, then the next year she didn't stay with her chicks but about 10 days and abandoned them. What's really bad is to walk up on a nest that you know should be hatching and all the chicks have been killed as they hatched. You never know 100% with some of them, but I do have a few proven ones that I can count on.

I had a couple year old hen beat the hell out of all but one of her chicks. I managed to save 1 when I realized what was going on. I killed her immediately. No time for that bullsh*t. I have too many good hens to put up with that. I do understand some hens are valuable so some might put up with it or not let her hatch them. To each their own.

I was impressed too. Her mother had big clutches too and her last one was 16 eggs.

You are right and I would move the nest buckets down, but I am too lazy as they are screwed in place... So I just covered the hole.

I prefer to let the hens raise them. She is really nice bird, so I tolerate a little of the funny stuff from her. Most of my hens are pretty decent even with chicks, but my son knows this hen and will not get in the pen with her. lol

That sucks. I haven't had any like that in a while, but did years ago. It was the worst with pullets and their first batch. They would kill them as they hatched.
