Centra you're not really gonna build like that huh? Overheat and no ventilation is just asking for sick birds you know this. At least put some venting along the top and bottom. Maybe totally removable tops with hardware cloth like cock boxes

seems like a good idea for cold areas... I can see it getting nasty if its wet and humidity is high...

probably work well here in my desert biome as a temporary holding.

here is my home built 2x2x2.. very open.. but I dont have worry about cold.. jsut heat .

The stagnant air is the issue. Cross ventilation especially with pretty much any type of bedding. Respiratory problems. In a 2x2 box u know how much heat a chicken will make ok a lot

I put birds in my shed/barn in drop pens with a little of straw just to keep their feet clean and helps me clean up the floor. The shed isn't insulated and is vented. I have two in there in now. Really they are just outta the wind but it's temporary anyway.

Can't speak for too cold but mine seem a lot better at 15° than 110 and humidity

Door setup was what I liked. Ventilation is very much a concern with backside kept open with lats or welded wire. Setup would not be used whenever birds are in molt or when weather hot. Pens would be an additional foot taller and possibly a foot deeper. I would remove each bird daily for a little excersize. Duration of stay would be ten days tops. Setup might be used for injured birds. Might also be good for holding chicks or juveniles individually for some of my little experiments.

How about having them on wire with a removable tray underneath. Then u don't need any bedding and they won't be tromping in there mess. Seems a clean environment. No dust no crap getting all over them

I am using larger pens with hardware cloth for bottoms now. Birds getting feet dinged up a little somehow on that hardware cloth. I might try with the plastic coated stuff used on fish cages to see how that works. Trays beneath with add a good 3" per level which will push limits on ceiling room.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/content/type/61/id/7655661/ Other than the doors I use to have the exact same setup but with 12 keep stalls. The bottom set of 4 was about 18" off the floor. I never had any problems with a cock overheating and I've conditioned hundreds of them back in the days.

I think the loss of 3" in a height that is higher anyway is worth it. The coated wire sounds good. When I had mine on wire I didn't see any problems but never really inspected either. My 3x3 on wire gets used a lot in the spring into summer for Broody hens, chicks and stags
