I started to do medicated starter crumble... for a long as I can for the last two years. And even feed it to the free range adults (because I cant stop them). Seems to work well.

I know its not all natural hippy but it really stops chicks from getting sick and dying.
 
I hate to use the term indoctrinated because it's so overused but that pretty much sums it up. Everybody turns into the same little robot doing the same sh*t over and over.
 
So if I went to a lower calcium layer and some scratch grain would that work?
You could just use layer pellets. Everything else really is extra. You ain't gonna turn a mediocre bird into a world beater because of the feed. Unless they ain't getting enough or too much
 
I got it due to the younger chicks I have but I'm sure they can handle pellets at around 8weeks now I still got a bit less than half a bag left but my adults just waste it.
