Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Love the pic of Biscuit! I know you are not breeding Dels, but if you were, I see a couple that would be culls due to their too dark, and frankly, too solid-colored, hackles (though Dels do change quite a bit as they grow) They should have barring, which really looks more like dots on those skinny hackle feathers. Georgie has too-dark hackles herself and I see another reason that I probably shouldn't hatch her babies anymore. She tends to throw that dark coloring more often than not. But, you have yourself some sweet, friendly girls there, Nick, and they should be great layers!

Yes, Biscuit is such a sweetie.

Which ones are you talking about? No matter what, they are such a joy to have around. And they are so curious about EVERYTHING, something that I've only noticed before in BR's.

ETA, gender ideas? I'm only sure of the last one being male, and three being girls. The second one makes my head spin, though!

Jay-Z is one that you wouldn't want if you were breeding to the Standard of Perfection. Many times, males inherit traits from their moms, so his hackles are way too solid/dark because of mom. There is one more who has solid streaks in the hackles, but that one may lighten up as it gets its adult feathers. I don't think Jay will lighten and change enough to keep as a good Del breeder, but for a backyard flock, he'll do fine. Let me see if I can find a pic of Georgie to post for you so you can see her hackles. They're not super dark, but they don't have enough actual barring. Georgie had great tail black before her molt and she has good body size, though.

I'm going through my last cull how many of you use a scale? My Roosters are fine size wise but my females must be petite out of 15 pullets only 3 made weight now I'm grading them like they were hens as their birthday is only in 3 weeks and they really haven't added all that much weight since the first part of November as the same 3 are still the nicest. My project crosses are looking mighty fine those are a Delaware Rooster over New Hampshire hens only 2 months old so I have a bit before I know how they will grade but they look very much like a pure Delaware I'll see if I get any red leakage when they molt....I am not a good chicken picture taker but I'm going to try again Sunday. So I have a few laying hens for sale again but I think they are all spoken for I'll know by Sunday.....soon I'll be hatching my pure Dels that will be exciting.

Lotsa, would LOVE to see pictures of the Del x NH- I am really anxious to try that myself, so anything I can learn from your experience will help!

I'm curious about this too. Id be very curious to see how the cross chicks grow and if bred back to the same colored birds they'll stay clean right? No leakage right? Just want to be sure I understand how this cross works.

isn't the delawareXnew hampshire what the hatcheries are selling for indian rivers? what percentage of chicks would be the delaware color?
