Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

dh finally got gas today. maybe we are gaining ground.
Our only island feedstore went under water and now we need help even feeding our local chicken population? My sons and I will be helping to clean them up as we can. it was never expected this would happen as they werent in an evac zone......

Yes I brought everyone indoors for the night! They're back out now. Two eggs today! Brave baby girls.

Tree down, missed the bird house, the coop and the fence! Luck of the Chiken lovers, right Tina?

Some of the trees down in our neighborhood. Lots of broken porcelain transformer pieces on the ground too.

Oh my god are we getting fat here! Apple pie, pork chops, cookies, hoppin john, biscuits, greens, oven fried chicken help!

....and chocolate peanut butter truffles with pretzel crunchies and salt. And s'mores. And pop corn. And wine. Lord lord lord!

I've been meaning to tell you how much I enjoy your pictures. I really love to see all the photos that are shared on this thread.

You all inspire me to grow a garden next year, learn how to do canning, start baking again and pick up my crochet hook and knitting needles. I'm even hoping to learn how to incubate and hatch eggs.

Is anyone here have an incubator that Linz and I could possibly borrow in the beginning of December? I may have an opportunity to get some eggs when we travel to back to Virginia after Thanksgiving. I hesitate to buy an incubator until we learn whether incubating is fun or frustrating for us.

Maggie, let me know if you want me to bring in food for you.
My little diesel goes everywhere!
You crack me up little CFGM..............you are the chicken angel. I'm good thank you. I can travel once gas is availablle into NJ if need be.
I've only got 12 peeps right now. let them free ranging finally today before they have to be on lock down again by tomorrow evening.

Oh mother nature take a nap........please.............

You beat me to it, CFG! (BTW I see you got your friend status back, nice)

I found gas on the Merritt Pkway just north of NY for $4.19/gallon if you pay cash, and I only had to wait 30mins. My SIL called around 7:00pm to say that they had refueled the Shell station downtown here as well. We are still without power; our generator is going but I am nervous about how much it can handle at this point. There were crews here with Mississippi plates this morning, and I went and made corn muffins for them but by the time I went back they were gone. *sigh* new transformers, all sitting on the curb.... just... sitting there... doing nothing.

Husband says that there was a taped recording of an exec from LIPA saying, "Hey we don't want to damage our cash flow, let's not go crazy with the overtime." I believe it, these utilities are just licensed monopolies. It's Standard Oil all over again (somewhere up above my high school history teacher Mr. Feig is smiling).

Maggie I can try getting in touch with those Utica people again and seeing if they are coming down here & asking them to throw chicken feed on the trucks - or - I can pick up a few bags myself. I don't live anywhere near a Tractor Supply though so it'd be hard to get anything in quantity. I'll just buy out the Pet Pantry in Greenwich or something, probably around 100lbs.

The back of the minivan is full of supplies to be dropped off at the local church tomorrow, including Folgers' Coffee and a 2lb bag of sugar because god knows that's what I'd be needing to get through this sort of a clean-up, lol. The girls put a bag of stuffed animals together that they felt they could part with for all the children that lost theirs in the flood. I am very proud of them, if terrified of the bag that goes, "Mama!" every time I move it. I cannot bring myself to believe that there is another storm coming on Wednesday. If they cancel school again I will hide in the chicken coop all day.

Hope everyone hugged a chicken today,
Heather

PS Thanks for the compliments about my photos! I am an Instagram dork now, it's so silly but it's fun. I also stopped by Michaels and picked up three skeins of yarn and a 9mm crochet hook so I can make a few attempts at a hat and then stuff it all somewhere and forget it, lol. You guys inspire me too. I need some stress relief that doesn't come in chocolate form, my only pair of big pants just got a hole in them.

This morning we had a power crew outside our house. I had a nice (short) chat with one of the guys. He came in from Iowa. The other truck was from Nebraska. They told me everyone has been very nice to them. I thanked them for coming all the way here to help us. He blew it off, saying "It's our job." Bobby, ever the cynic, mentioned later the boatloads of money there were getting...

In any event, Midwestern crew notwithstanding, we STILL do not have power. Most of the streets around us are back on, but we're living in a little strip of dark. I'm starting to get a little squirrely. Laura is making me crazy obsessing over when the power is coming back on. And now it's spreading to Bobby. I may be next. I checked the outage map a little while ago.

We got lucky this morning. We went to the library to return a couple of things and found a gas station with a short line for gas containers (which we now keep in the car for just such a situation). We filled up two 5 gallon tanks in about 1/2 hour. It was like hitting the lottery.

I think I'm going to try to find a way to volunteer. I'm starting to lose it. It's all we talk and think about around here.

On the bright side, I've completed 61 out of 110 squares for my hurricane afghan. And Laura's being elected Department Secretary at the FD meeting tonight.

And her boyfriend's house has power. So she can stay there and stop driving me crazy.

You are so darn funny!!!!!!! You calls them as u sees them and I love it.

Good night! gotta try to gret some sleep.

Good Morning folks! My power and cable has been blinking again. It's fine, they turn it off to fix other blocks. My problem is-there's still wires hanging everywhere. What happens when this stupid Nor'easter comes in tomorrow?

Anyhow, today is clean up the yard day. Raking and bagging. there's no way I'm going to blow the leaves and use gas, so the kids are pretty annoyed with the whole storm thing making them do extra manual labor.

Tired kids don't fight after spending 11 days together. My daughter is cleaning her room today. Danny went up to turn on the vent fan in her closet to draw fireplace heat to the rest of the house...oh boy. You didn't even see his head explosion coming. It seems Little miss has decided to shove everything she doesn't feel like looking at...in her closet. Not good.

I have to take my kitty to the vet-UTI. Ugh. Good thing I bought health insurance for him. (After laying out thousands upon thousands several years ago for my Dobe to have surgery for an obstruction then having to put him down a while later because of pain...I almost lost my house-all my pets are now insured)

Danny just left for Amityville. His cousins house on the canal-under 5 feet of water, so he's got to start gutting it, to redo the whole thing again. This is the 3rd time. A Nor'easter took it out several years ago, then Irene last year caused her to replace all the floors, now the sheetrock, everything has to come out. I understand loving the life on the water-she's got her boat tied 10 feet from her back door...but honestly, I'd have moved after Irene. I just don't have the wherewithall for all of that.

I hope everything is good with everyone. Danny was able to fill his truck yesterday at Hess-he had to show FD id, but they have a pump for them, Cops, and Military. The policeman there told him to call me to fill my truck too. He told him he'd do that tomorrow if need be. Others need the gas more. I have 3/4 of a tank. If anyone needs anything delivered to them-let me know. I'm going into NHP at some time this week, my friends are collecting supplies for Danny's firehouse to bring to Breezy Point, so I have to get the stuff from them. I guess I'll clean out my attic too. It's a good excuse.

Have a great day, folks. I'll be around if I'm needed!!!
