Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

I bought this beautiful sorbaria, false spirea the other day when I went on a nursery run with my friends. Well the girls all but devoured it.
They are really enjoying their new dirt garden.
Locked 'em down. Opened the 5 I didn't think we're viable from the very beginning. They weren't.

I have two chicken stories to share….

Last night, I decided to put food dye in the vents of several of our silkies. We hope to start figuring out not only who is laying, but also which hen/pullet has the best fertility and which produces the nicest chicks in each pen. We now have hens marked with blue, red, pink, green, purple etc.

After spending all that time adding dye to the vents.... today only 1 gal out of 9 decided to lay an egg! Go figure, they must have known what I was up to and decided to rebel against color coding. Now we have colored poo in the pens, but not colored eggs. Lol

This afternoon, I got the brilliant idea to create a temporary fence around a garden area. I decided to put some of our chickens to work in hopes they will clear the garden for me, so I can plant some perennials. It's been a very long time since I have had a lovely flower garden and I need the cheering up.

Would you believe that I ended up sitting outside “babysitting” 3 silkie roosters in the new garden pen? I thought they would love it, but the minute I left them and walked inside the house they started to crow. When I stood at the window and spoke to them they would look at me and be quiet. The moment I stopped talking and walked away, they started crowing again! LOL

So there I sat, on a little stool...with my iPad...for a few minutes so they could start getting used the new 25'x10' garden area. It was downright silly that I had to keep them company. I think that only the girls will be coming out tomorrow…so I don’t have to deal with crowing again. The boys were such babies. haha:)

I really need chicken counseling.in 3-4 days if all goes well I could have 4 groups of chickens to take care of.
I can't take care of myself.
Knitting a chicken hat for my husbands partners grandchild.im not talking some cute little cuddly chicken either. I'm talking plucked with drumsticks. It is just so me.As a child I would have been in every family picture with it on. Like I have time to knit.i just don't watch TV.

Tina too bad we aren't closer. I have a beautiful Ansonia 'blue star' that I just dug up and am going to split. More like use the sawall to . Enjoy putting your garden together.

I had a very busy crazy weekend, between baseball cancellations, a bridal shower for my niece (it was nice, but I'm just not that into toilet paper games and my husbands family is still the same clannish bunch) My little man was invited to his best friends Communion party, which he had so much fun at, but apparently learned that restaurants don't like when you use the chairs in the dining room (not in the party room) to build a fort and play musical chairs. That's my boy! Now he wants to have the same venue for his own Communion next month. I have to go see how much THAT'S gonna be.

I wanted so badly to go to Chick-a-Palooza yesterday at Garden of Eve, but my two older sons decided to have an nasty fight, and simply ruined my mood and my desire to spend any money on them. They did not like cleaning their room after that-all day long!

It's cold today, but since it's earth day, I'm turning the compost, cleaning the coop and then food shopping at Lewin's farm.

Happy Earth Day!!

Happy Earth Day...
Did anyone see any meteors late last night? Moon and artificial lights messed it up for me. Gonna try again to night or wait till next year.
I went to a communion party also this weekend. My husbands second cousin. He was still trying to get back from CT. I think the kids dress cost more then my entire wedding 35 years ago. All the little girl wanted to do was come see my chickens and eggs. Wanted to know if I could take her home to get her shorts and flip-flops.i told her that I wish I could but since I had to be in a dress and heels she had to also.
She said the Easter bunny brought her chicks (aka dad) but her mom made her give them away. I told her that when she comes over she can pick out one of the chicks and name it and keep it at my house. Stage 1 chicken convert..

Carol! Lilly just loves that scarf, thank you! Also, I had nipple waterers in my pocket and forgot to give them to you. I am not sure where my brain is these days. It was wonderful to see you again, and again I wish we could have grabbed a coffee or such (next time I will bring one of those instant hotpacks so we can leave the chicks in the car for a short visit). The newbies are settling in and we are just loving the variety in that brooder. What a bunch of characters!

Hi everyone! Sorry I've been off the board for a while. As usual, health issues have slowed me down. Well, enough of my problems.

Suzanne and Bobby, congratulations on your marriage. Bobby is coming out with the better end of the deal, but then again, I'm partial. Have a wonderful life together.

Maggie, congrats to you on the new grandchild. We are going to be grandparents in two months.

I know some have had less than great days, and some have had downright sad moments. My thoughts and best wishes go out to you.

I guess most of the male chicken people haven't checked in recently. Hoping they drop in to let everyone know how they are doing.

Glad to see that the thread is doing well, and even growing. Welcome to all the new friends who have come here. This has to be one of the best threads for any state or location. And, so many have really bonded here.

Have a great evening. Talk to you all soon.

Hey all! New to BYC, just getting back to chickens. I live in a town called Setauket, on Long Island. Got my flock of three from Maggie on Staten Island! Been about a week now, and I couldn't be happier. They have been free ranging in the yard every day, putting themselves back in the coop just at dusk for me to lock them down at night. They are the sweetest, best mannered ladies, Maggie really did a nice job raising them :)
