Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Hey Guys,

I do apologize for saying anything negative about L.I., I know how beautiful it is out there, I just worry for you all. I got the Smithsonian magazine email this morning and there's a fascinating story about a witch hunt on East Hampton - http://www.smithsonianmag.com/histo...tch-of-the-Hamptons-175990771.html?c=y&page=1
Apparently there's an event scheduled for November out there if any of you are interested.

This storm is finally sinking in for me. I had the news off for the last few days because of that horrible case where the nanny murdered the two children. I couldn't stand to hear about it without crying and I didn't want the girls to hear it either. Plus the weather was so beautiful Fri & Sat. I just took the dog for a walk and already though the wind is picking up, the sky seems grey... very ominous. We are lucky to be on the peak of a hill and have never had flooding, plus the generator, so aside from filling a bathtub with water I'm good to go. I also have enough canned goods to last a month, YES I CAN!, hee hee. Unfortunately my in-laws are coming to stay over tonight which I hope does not include political diatribes and religious indoctrination. As long as my youngest doesn't inform her grandmother that Mommy does not believe in God we should be ok.

Roberta you cracked me up with your summary of LIPA's message. ConEd is even worse, they raise the rates and tell everyone they are upgrading equipment and then surprise! the power goes out in Queens for three weeks. Oh well at least some crews from the south might get some overtime work up here after the storm.

We had a family vote on whether or not to bring the chickens inside at breakfast; I lost. I am torn about it because I do think the coop is very sturdy, but there is only one small roosting space for them that isn't open to ventilation. The pecking order is still being re-established now that my Welsummer is getting bigger and I'm afraid the three big girls might bully her and the bantams. Maybe I'll just bring the three babies inside and put them in the dog's crate. Oh this should prove interesting.

I am looking forward to lighting a bunch of big fires, roasting smores and baking my head off. I do hope the girls get to have Halloween though, considering they got snowed on last year. Suzanne has my cell phone number so if anyone is in Westchester and needs to find refuge, PM me or her and get my number that way. I think Christine has my number too.

I hope all you crafty folks have a big pile of yarn to keep yourselves going through the storm! I will trade apple pie for handiwork next week. :)

Take care everyone, hugs to all!!

Morning all. Sorry I haven't been around much lately but have been helping our son get his house finished. Had to replace a sewer line in the house the other day. Im glad he and our other son are able to do all the heavy work. I'm there as technical assistant. Lots of stuff still popping up as being broken or needing updating. I haven't been feeling all that well since being taken off the arthritis meds. Finally got good liver numbers, so I should be able to start up soon. I am so backed up on the posts and hope everyone has been well.

A breeze just started to kick up here this morning. It looks like Sandy is going to be one of the worst ever. I can't believe how far inland the effects will be. All the way to Chicago there could be 60 mile and hour winds.

I've got two chickens actively molting. The new feathers are looking better than their first set. Can't wait for the rest to start. It also seems as if they do not peck at the new feathers. Hoping they will stop the feather picking permanently.

I guess all of us will be hunkered down the next few days. Good luck to everyone, and their chickens. Above all, stay safe.

It will make it seem like a double high tide with the full moon and the winds blowing in the direction they will. the water cant go back out to sea properly so will rise higher than it should is how I understand it.

If you need anything, Carolyn, Email me. My husband has to drive by you guys to get home tonight-he can easily stop to help out! (He's really good at tarping and boarding up chicken coops...LOL!!)

Ha ha. Thanks for the offer of the loan of a good husband. I'm fine. More to the point, I just double-checked DH's itinerary: his flight is NOT due to land around midnight. I mis-read the info yesterday. His flight is due to land at 7:30 this evening. So I'm pretty sure that Jet Blue will manage it alright. Just got an automated call from Adelphi University: Garden City campus will be closed Monday and Tuesday. Whoo Hooo. DH gets off work.
Stay safe everyone.
