Spotted on Reddit and Need Identification

Woah! If that is a pekin, then that is a big mallard! But like other people said only domestic mallards get that big and I agree with them.

There is a big pond at a park nearby where I live, and I've seen pekins, cayugas, buffs, a few runners, and even some geese! Why do people do this!? It makes me mad. 😡
you need to go get those pekins and all these domestic ducks! People are so mean to their animals, they get ducklings and think they will never "grow up" !

Again, guess I'll go against the crowd here. Why capture them if they don't want to be captured? If they come to you, sure take them in. If not? Leave em be. That area looks like a quite inviting habitat for ducks, lots of natural cover to hide from predators and I'm sure it's filled with nymphs/ other bugs for them to eat. Maybe they'll survive for quite a while. Maybe they won't 🤷 none of us can tell that from a picture.
Animals don’t know that they need to be rescued, or that people will rescue them. Domestic ducks can’t fly, need a lot more food to survive than wild ones, can’t migrate, and don’t know how to escape from predators. If they’re dumped in a place where the pond doesn’t dry up or freeze over every year (something wild ducks can escape by flying/migrating) their overall quality of life is still pretty poor as they will suffer from issues with malnutrition. Certain ducks, like pekins, are prone to bumble foot so will have to deal with untreated bumble foot after they’ve been dumped. Though I don’t think the duck pictured is a pekin since the face and body look to be too small for that.
