Spring Granny Square Swap

OK as much as I hate pink I have to say that mint green and soft pink are soooooo adorable together on a baby blanket!!! I do love that mint green color in yarn!

I'm not overly fond of pinks but I love raspberry!

I think I would love raspberry too.....I think when I go shopping for yarn all I do is look at the color or colors and if I like it I get it. Very seldom have I ever looked at the name of it.....example: I had picked up some yarn for a scarf for myself. Loved the colors in it. Now heres the BUT, once I got a good pattern amount going I thought wow this looks like I'm going hunting. Looked at the name and low and behold it was camoflage.

I still made myself the scarf....just to wear around outside here at the house

Hi Kim! I know I owe you some updated pics of chicks. The first set are already outside in their new coop. They still have lights on them though. It's still to cold for them to go without.

Red is my favorite color followed closely by orange then green. I also like most blues and some purples.

Great coop design. What do you use for the exterior?

It's covered with a blue tarp and then a heavy silver tarp. Surprisingly it's quite warm for the birds. This one is 8.5x9' and houses 13 LF nicely. In this pic I'm adding a run doubling the size so they can go outside. The run was covered in clear plastic which acted like a green house and kept things warm. Humidity of course is something to watch out for and I did have to pull some of the plastic off. The rooster in here is the only one that didn't sustain frostbite.

I would love a camo scarf! My youngest DS would really love it! Now I need to know what brand it was so I can make something for him. lol

Rancher I love the basic idea of this but I would need to tweak it for my area. Plastic tarps, even the good quality reinforced ones, are shredded by the winds here, Hurricane force winds are very common here so that our roofs and houses have to have hurricane strips and clips and tie downs to pass inspection. That whole coop would fly away and disappear with the first good wind. I really like the style though. I'm betting I could do a berm style coop with this design.

I hope you don't mind if I steal a few ideas from you here. My brain is running a hundred mph right now. Something that makes my husband nervous cause he knows it means more stuff for him to do but in the longterm he says he loves it since my planning always saves him time, money and back labor. This would even make a great shell for a cob house. Ok off to do more research. I think I have a new favorite design for a chicken coop.

The basic design could be used for a greenhouse as well. Have you used them for that purpose Rancher? Light Canvas covers would be sturdier in the wind and you could have heavy clips available to roll up the sides so the wind can pass under the rolls when they are tied/clipped up. I'm thinking maybe an earth berm for the bottom wall maybe 2 & 1/2 feet up then the canvas covered hoops above that. I have seen hoop houses made with pvc pipes but they did not look nearly as sturdy as yours do Rancher. Wow I like the possibilities here...

hmmmm

Oops getting off track, I am supposed to be researching on how to rabbit proof a veggie garden. I have way too much stuff I want to put in to do raised beds this year and the rabbits are everywhere up here!!! I bet you have some great ideas for that too Rancher. Yes?

Anyone else have some great ideas to share?

Of course use whatever you can. I realize each area of this great country is different. It does get windy here but not nearly as bad as you state. What I like about this design is one , it works well and two, it's cheap enough. The most expensive part is the hardware cloth. $68 dollars worth. I think the whole thing was about $300, give or take.

As for a green house , absolutely the cheapest we small holder can get. Plenty of room for the basic family need I think. Mine is off the ground due to the wetness of the area here. Plus they are light enough to pull with a tractor and move to another area I think.

I've seen this design used for other livestock housing too. If I could afford it I'd cover it with something more durable.

Thank you Sunny and Smitty! <blush> That was actually a "before the haircut" pict. I hadn't had it cut in years and was about to get it cut SHORT and wanted to send picts to my Sister in law in TN. Turns out that I never took the after - LOL

I LOVE the baby polish picts!!!

I had decided that I was only going to get brown or tinted egg layers when I finally start my flock but I've gotten so smitten by picts of this breed, I think that I'm going to have to include at least one just for the fun of it.

Rancher - what is the wire part of your hoop-coop made from? It looks way more stiff/sturdy than fencing wire?

Soooo :
Who has 1 set of squares completed so far?
Who had more than one set?
Who has already gotten at least one project that they're itching to start as soon as they finish this one? LOL

Can't remember the brand but bought it at Hobby Lobby.

Thanks for the tips Rancher! I'm thinking an extra layer of chicken wire over the welded wire and then a skin of cob over that. Cob, of course is super cheap and will absorb humidity as well as keep it cool in summer and warm in winter.
I've also been looking at these earth houses on line that are made from "tubes" (like sand bags that are 50-100' long) filled with earth and maybe a little bit of cement (my soil is sandy and could use the addition of cement) laid out with barbed wire between the layers to hold them til the earth sets up. The bags are coiled like the coiled clay pots are but on a much bigger scale of course. Super cheap to construct and again you have the benefits of cob without as much upkeep as cob (final result is plastered over with traditional stucco materials). http://calearth.org/building-designs/what-is-superadobe.html
I am really into cheap alternatives. lol My DH says I'm frugal not cheap. Not sure what the difference is.

Canesisters I am only half way through my first set. I doubt I'll do 2 sets this time. I'm hosting the next swap so I want to save a little energy for that one. Yes I have a bunch of projects lined up for after this swap is done! It has been very hard to stay focused on this cause I am itching to get going on the next set of projects.

Dascountry I will do a search on line for it since we do not have Hobby Lobby here. Thanks for the info though. My DS will love something made from this.
