Also... this is Elvis. She spent a week indoors after being injured by a predator. I had her sleeping on newspapers in the bathtub. When she laid an egg in the bathroom sink, I decided she was well enough to go back outside!

LOVE IT!!! And he's not so dumb, really. When Mama got up off those eggs, they were nice and toasty. We see it as Kitty keeping the eggs warm. Kitty see sit the other way around ... a warm spot to curl up in. Either way, the eggs (and the cat) stay warm ... everybody wins!We once had a banty hen who was flying up into the rafters where the cat sleeps. I finally caught her, climbed up on a ladder, and found our big dumb fluffy tomcat purring and incubating 14 eggs.
I hope your husband didn't find the egg the hard way - as in- putting his foot in the boot!Sadly, no pics (at least, none digital, probably have a real photo on paper somewhere), but my old coondog (may she rest in peace) would find hidden nests in the pasture and bring the eggs back and stash them in my husband's work boots on the porch! (we were highly puzzled until we caught her in the act). Yes, dogs can have very soft mouths and carry eggs very carefully -AND put them in boots without cracking them ! I also found a nest inside a half empty bag of shavings that was under the overhang of the raised coop.
Yes. Mind you, she's laying less and less. Now she's barely laying. This spring she laid a total of 6 gigantic blue eggs. She laid about ten the year before that. And only in the spring, when the temperature's really really comfortable. I reckon if she'll stop entirely in another year or two. But yeah, she's always been really healthy and robust. You have a 10 yr. old who is still laying?
She's not the least bit obsessed about carrying things in her mouth... lolI'll believe you if you post pictures of the pibbieface!
Oh no, there were like 10 or more eggs in there the first time she did it, she filled the boot right to the top. I wish I could have seen her trotting back and forth, pasture to boot, back to pasture, back to boot.I hope your husband didn't find the egg the hard way - as in- putting his foot in the boot!
What a clever doggo! <3Oh no, there were like 10 or more eggs in there the first time she did it, she filled the boot right to the top. I wish I could have seen her trotting back and forth, pasture to boot, back to pasture, back to boot.
That's for sure! Quite a few years ago, I was outside and my black lab came to me from the swampy area out behind the barn. He had a blue-wing teal in his mouth. The bird was fine, just looking around trying to figure out what to do. I had no idea where, how or why it ended up in his mouth. I got the bird away from him, and went about my business. About 10 minutes later he came up to me, grass hanging out of his mouth, and holding his mouth funny. I got him to open up, and he had 3 little eggs in his mouth - completely unharmed! Near as I can tell, he was out exploring and came across this teal on her nest, and for some reason he felt the need to retrieve her. I don't know why he brought the eggs to me...Yes, dogs can have very soft mouths and carry eggs very carefully -AND put them in boots without cracking them !
