OK here it goes. The duck penis has an almost corkscrew shape, so on top of the fact that the chicken is not anatomically designed to receive something internally, it's even more painful because of the shape of the penis

It really sounds awful for the hens that end up mated by drakes. Sounds incredibly dangerous

Reproduction is an incredible thing
It's just a weird topic to get into

Definitely important when considering ducks with chickens- I may get chickens someday in the distant future, but I'd personally not risk housing them with male ducks. My future boys would have to be completely separate.

you'll also need to decide the breed of the male so he is not too big for the girls, he can drown her if he is too heavy.

Sometimes people minimize the risk and it ends badly for a chicken.

I don't want any issues! Someone up the road had a drake with 4 hens and a bunch of chickens but ive seen the drake try anf mate the chicken

My girls and I have a question about an action our male ducks do....
When I come up the walk from parking my car, the male ducks do a deeeep neck/head plunge and swoop back up as long as their necks will let them. Very fluid! I can see about getting a video of it.
What does this mean?
We have seen the neck bobs, especially int he water, to the females. But there is this deep, super expressive plunge and swoop... usually ending with hackle feathers up ( back of the neck, all the way down)... no charging or aggression.
Any ideas?

I don't have drakes so can't help. I know the others do so hopefully they can explain!

I love them none the less, but boy sometimes they weird me out.



I actually don't get grossed out by these things at all, but I find that most people do, so I usually have to stop myself from explaining further because it usually grosses them out too much

It is unfortunately. I've seen a muscovy drake try and breed a hen, but I've also seen an aseel rooster mate a female duck

I plan on a bachelor flock of rescue drakes, further down the line. In the more foreseeable future I plan on getting a couple more girls, and possibly a small drake. Maybe a call, maybe something a little bigger but still fairly small. My girlies comfort and wellbeing is my priority- and then if they dislike him he'll be the start of my bachelor flock!

not a dumb question, I think a prolapse is an egg laying related injury, but check with the smarter (and better informed) people to be sure.

No, roosters can't prolapse. Only hens can, and it's usually caused by a hen pushing out a veery large egg, or from a hen deficient in calcium trying to lay
