Surviving Minnesota!

Hi Rhetts

I was just wondering where you were today! funny!
Checking out the new digs here. It will be awhile before I can read through the whole thread. I posted this on the MN thread and copied and pasted it here in case anyone can help out.

Does anyone have feed mills mix layer feed for you? My BIL is looking into getting feed by the bulk. He is talking to the guy about different mixes. I am currently getting feed from that mill that I like a lot. Problem is BIL doesn't like that fish meal is used for protein and wants to take it out completely and just up the linseed meal. I don't agree and think that could be bad for the hens but I need the facts to back it up. Can anyone point me to where I can learn about the nutritional needs for chickens and the percents and all that stuff?
Chickens aren't herbivores, Give them the dang fishmeal, lol Fishmeal is a great protein for chickens. with linseed oil you also need some added supplemental protein?

Just did a quick search, Couple of links to read.

Fishmeal

This article shows that linseed oil needs to be processed to make it usable for poultry.
Linseed meal is an important feedstuff for cattle but its use in poultry feeds is limited.
maybe a starting place anyways...

@KlopKlop I brought my Molter Fi in today to feed her as she is not eating real well on her own out there. Well, she ate 12 live meal worms, would have ate more if i'd given them to her. then she ate some scrambled eggs, some shredded cheese, a couple leaves of kale, a couple bites of sweet potato, then she wouldn't eat anymore. I feel pretty good that she ate that much though. then I put her back out on the roost. So yeah, if I were you, i'd bring that little girl in and give her items she really would want just to keep her eating until she eats on her own...

good pictures Holm...

Rhett why does he not want the fish meal? As Cluckies said. Chickens love meat! Just throw them a live mouse and watch everyone scramble.

Give them a wolf carcass and make them real happy!

I told him that chickens are not vegetarians by nature. I asked him if he knew for sure that there would not be side effects of more linseed meal whether short or long term. I like the feed the mill makes as is and so do the hens. I don't want to change it. I need to inform myself and am working on it. Thanks for the info!

He is questioning where it is sourced from.
My ducks LOVE chasing mice. they are so funny to watch!
Ha! yes the hens would love some payback I am sure!

My guess is the fish meal comes from dead fish.. Just a guess though but I think most of the fish used come from in the water.
of course! I should have thought of that on my own!

@holm25 what do you feed your cows during the last stage of pregnancy if anything different? Been reading that it is super critical the last 3 months for a healthy calf and mother to give them more nutrients. Trying to figure out what that all means as far as feed goes. Thought I would consult an expert on the matter. :)
