What size was the cyst? I would have loved to see a pic of that.

Ok, maybe a little bit fascinating...

I feel that if it has solidified it does need to come out. If caught early enough where it's still softer I use an 18g needle on a syringe and suck it out. I figure that if it possibly provides relief, it's worth the time and effort. Unfortuately, if I say 'bird' and 'sinus' in the same sentance my family disappears so I am on my own (all three times I dealt with it). The birds in my experience (two turkeys and a paecock) held remarkably still for it. I like to think they knew that I was trying to help, but the reality is probably that once the needle went in they were afraid to move so they didn't tear their face open.

You did an awesome job. I doubt you care, but if I knew you, I would say that I'm proud..since I don't I am in AWE that someone who hasn't done this before, did it twice!!!! Doing so with the advice and help from your peers!!! Pat yourself on the back for me!! Very inspirational!
As Steve would have said "Good on ya mate!"

it was about 1 inch round. When I removed it I did it in pieces so it did not come out in one lump. I will show you the tool I used, it was a cuticle pusher. It has smooth round edges and is curved so it can "dig" out the cyst without hurting the bird. Be sure that if you ever have to do this that you soak everything including your needles in alcohol for about 10-15 minutes before starting to be sure they are clean.

Too bad you don't live close. I could bring my zoo animals to you for Outpatient Care.

Just wanted to update this thread. Both birds are doing great. Ares the peacock has a long beautiful tail and the hen will be breeding this season to Zeus, my silver pied. Both can see fine and "knock on wood" no more have had any infections since.
