In December, I am planning to visit my family in Mexico for Christmas. I was wondering, has anyone ever taken their ducks out of the country? I can't imagine leaving my ducky with someone else

I know December is a long way from now, but, I want to see if it's even possible to take ducks out of the country like you can with dogs.

I don't know what the rules are but I'm assuming it's not as simple as just popping the duck's seatbelt on and driving off wherever

You probably have to have some sort of pet passport or something, or at least permission to take the pet over the border...

It can be done, the APA covers both USA and Canada, (I don't think Mexaco though) they have shows in both countries and birds are moved for these shows. Since there are some very nasty poultry diseases in Mexico I would expect the big problem would be getting back to the US. Be advised that several US states have restrictions about birds entering their state without 'papers" this is usually a vet health certificate with certain blood tests required and often different for each state. The ones I have heard of are PA, VA, TX and CA. They mostly don't have Border patrols but if caught it is usually a matter of death for the bird(ducks are cheap) or an escort out of the state. Do research before taking off and Good Luck.

Maybe you'd be better off hiring a duck sitter for your ducky friend? Someone who could come to your yard and care for your duck? Or maybe you could let him visit at a friend's house?

Maybe your vet can board him?

If you start asking around now, I am sure you can find a reliable duck sitter.

Also check out what you need for ducky to re-enter the US from Mexico.
Then make up your mind whether it is more important for your duck to go to Mexico with you, or is it better for your duck to stay home (considering the death penalty for "undocumented ducks")

Right now with all that is going on in mexico it is really hard to even just take a box of goods to parents over there. People take their dogs but have a very hard time you have to have vet documents proving vaccinations just for a dog or cat. I can't imagine it would be easier for a duck.

With the war going on in mexico they are being pretty strict about things right now and anyone coming in is being checked extensively.
The Mexican council may have problems with this but worse trying to get back with it into the US when the signs say No birds can cross the boarder back into the US.

I also wanted to add the sign at the boarder has images of the type of birds they are speaking of these are wild birds, chickens, and ducks on the image next to the words
NO BIRDS ALLOWED you must claim everything at customs with the way they are being at the boarder me I wouldn't chance it.

I have been back and forth through there for 18 yrs even with just 5 children they give me a hard time every year getting back into the US.

Good luck...

A friend couldn't bring back the chickens she bought in Mexico even though she had a vet certificate. They even hassled her about the eggs. It was a nightmare for her and cost a lot of money to only be able to bring over 2 dozen eggs instead of 10 live birds. She figures with a hatch of only 16 live chicks she paid $75 a chick.
