The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Julie - that first picture of your big blue boy reminds me of Winston !! And the color too, as Winston is pretty dark. I do prefer the lighter blue in the roosters, but the darker blue in hens.

You don't want the blues to light either. I hope Matt H can come on here and maybe discuss this more of his experience as he has been showing blue Orps for years and knows his stuff. He has never steered me wrong in advice. I appreciate his valauble contribution as he has hung with some of the Masters in the UK.

Matt could you give us a lesson on breeding blues?

Jeremy - I used to really like the blues the best too. However, once The O's came along I've had to rethink that too !!!

Yes, please Matt come and give us lessons on blue breeding. My info is seriously limited on that subject.

It seems like I can't win for losing.

I hatched a set of Black Orps and the result was one chick. We were really thinking it was a pullet - looked like a pullet, acted like a pullet, so must be a pullet, right? NOPE! She is crowing now!

Anybody need a new alarm clock for Christmas?

Kandace - I feel your pain !! At this point, though, I'd just like to have something to hatch. I've had 5 eggs since last Friday. HOpefully they will pick up laying soon !!

Funny!

And here I sat, thinking I had a pair and NOPE..........I've got 2 girls.

Happy Chooks, I don't know if you missed my post about possibly rehoming my blue boy to you, I'm not ready to give him up just yet, I want to see how he matures a bit more, but that's a possibility if you're still interested in a roo.

I did miss that post, sorry. If/when you decide to let him go, let me know. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet, still overthinking it.

To me, part of their appeal is the varying shades of blue, it makes each bird that much more unique. I think that's why I prefer them over the blacks. The O's are fabulous though, hopefully my black girls grow up to be just as nice!

In regards to eye color, I think a few of them may have a lighter brown eye, including the blue boy. I haven't really inspected them all thoroughly for eye color, but I have noticed that a couple do have a more hazel, medium brown colored eye. How much of a fault is this? Is it easily corrected by breeding light eyed birds to those with dark eyes? How "dark brown" should their eyes be though, like chocolate brown or almost black brown? I guess I need to dig out my copy of the SOP and do some reading...
