Would someone give me a definition of a pure chicken? Easter Eggers are not a pure bred chicken, correct? But ameraucana and Araucana are? If I have a flock of different colored Orpington hens and roosters and the hens have chicks, are they all pure?
yes, if your flock are all purebred but blue black and splash, they are still purebred orps, kind of like labs, they come in black yellow and chocolate and come from the same parents. Color accepted for showing as you know, Blue black buff and white. Splash is just a color, it is what makes blue when bred to black. the reason they are not recognized for showing is because not enough people have bred and exhibited them for however many years it takes to prove them to the APA. its possible they will be an accepted color soon enough, just have to get them shown. the Imported orps are called imported because the parent stock was recently imported from other countries and may be different than the American type. Other countries have different standards and opinions on what an orp should look like or be verses what the Americans think they should be. there are many other colors in other countries that are accepted, they have been around quite a long time. Over here, we have not had certain colors very long so they are not accepted for showing. a breed is always considered purebred until you toss some other breed in the mix and then it, likes dogs, becomes a mutt. You can work on a project and use another breed to perhaps intro another color or pattern but they have to be bred back to purebred orps to regain their type for so many generations before being considered purebred again. clear as mud??
