The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I have a few clean legged golden cuckoo marans....and some lovely fat black orps......

Marans would be an easy cross to do, since they have white skin like Orps do. It would be even easier because they don't have feathered shanks! A Golden Cuckoo Orp would be very pretty!

I thought about outcrossing to Wheaten Marans when I was thinking of making Wheaten/Blue Wheaten Orps, I just don't have enough space or tolerance from my neighbors to have that many boys around for a project of that undertaking though.

There are breeders here who by accident or design have bred creles or close to it but they have been the APA SOP type Orp. How those birds arrived though could be helpful to anyone who wanted to try and recreate the color on or using either type. HappyMtn, your fat balck hens are lovely but Maran type infused makes me wonder how old we'd all have to be until they could best be described as FAT again LOL. Also, and this may well be subject to the input I've had, anyone I know who has discussed Maran temperament has given me the idea that it can vary a lot between birds and strains and that the AVERAGE Maran does not have anything like the temperament of most Orps. One of the neat things about Orps is that we humans tend to like their personalities and there seems less negative variance than with some breeds.

I have been working on the crele color for a couple years now and they are looking pretty nice. Color seems to breed pretty true. I crossed some of them back to the Lemon cuckoos this last breeding season and the type is looking better but it lightened the crele color a bit. I will try to take some new pics today or tomorrow to post. You can see some of my project pics here http://rockin-g-ranch.com/CreleOrpingtons.html
The crele color is one of my favorites!

FYI - for anyone that had eggs to hatch over the weekend - it was the best phase of the moon for the month of Feb!

Quote:
According to Llewellyn's 2012 Moon Sign Book chart it said to set eggs 1/31 to have eggs hatch during the fruitful period of 2/21-23. I did this with a batch of my own BBS eggs.... and then another date was 2/10 to hatch during the fruitful period of 3/2-3/4 which I did with eggs I recently got from you Rebel.

Oooh- the color on those looks great! Just need to get some of that "bustle" back.

I wish I had room to start another color project right now, but as of this morning I am taking another coop away from the chickens to use for the waterfowl. I am so owned by these geese its not even funny.

Jeremy, not sure if the legbar Orps are established as a color or if we are seeing an absolutely gorgeous first generation show of virtues from a color cross. Maybe Sandy will fill us in. I am wondering partly because with all the pictures available of UK and continental Orps no one has shown us any legbars. The creles don't have the most stunning color when looking at the hens but the cocks are beautiful. Color is said to breed true also. Type on some is just splendid looking. I am guessing that that's a result of having existed for some time (there, not here) and the fact that they are Orps and not recent breed infusions.

HappyMtn, laughing at your post where the geese are concerned. They are not hard. Just remember that they are like cats, that they are in charge and it is up to us to figure out what they want, how they want it and then just do it. They are not hard at all as long as we give up any inclination to be some sort of control freak. They are not like chickens.
