The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I would guess you got them from Debbie and Bud?
If so, Debbie's birds are from Goose and Fig. Yaya also purchased the eggs that hatched the huge blacks chicks from Debbie( who got them from Goose and Fig/HappyMtn)

That would be great. Are you allowed to say who you purchased them from? I am always interested in Big blacks. The biggest Black I have ever seen was not a import but I have never seen another Cock that large. He belonged to Rusty Wilkie in Fl. I think he purchased from a man getting out of Orps. He weighed 16 lbs and was very Wide and tall. The hens with him weighed 14 lb.
Julie,
Were you able to get any birds from him?

Yes, I did get eggs, but only 2 pipped and 1 survived. Don't know why the other died. Just woke up and looked in on them and there were 2 dead chicks in the brooder ( the black orp and an Isbar) both of which were shipped eggs. I have more of her eggs cooking, so hopefully I'll get some more. I also have some of Rusty Wilkie's blacks. They are actually the first orps I ever owned and are totally responsible for my obsession. The black hen I showed late last year and the early part of this year is out of his original stock which he sold most of. I don't think he has blacks anymore.

Yes I did in 2007 or 06. Cant remember now. that was when he was showing them.. I had some huge black from him and also he gave me a couple of his hens. They were not as large as the two girls he was showing with that big Cock. I know it helped it helped in size for the cross from Charlie on size.

He told me the girls didn't lay to often. They were not young birds. He did have a few hatched from them and he had probably 10 of the Cecil Moore hens. He had two wihtie hens that were as good as any European birds I have seen. They were huge and fluffy. He said they wouldn't lay though. He kept them for about three years planning to breed black over them since he didn't have a white male but they never layed. He bought some from a fellow in Michigan. I don't know who he got the blacks from

They never layed? That is so weird. I would think that a hen that didn't lay would get egg bound and die. Or maybe, they had some genetic abnormality that prevented them from laying....? Hmmmm, You've got me thinking now, I never even considered the possibility that a hen wouldn't lay. I guess it makes sense, humans run into all kinds of reproductive problems, so it would figure that chickens might too.

Excuse me for thinking out loud.

I am Very impatiently waiting the arrival of my new babies. I have the brooder all cleaned out, Re caulked and equipped with a broody hen. I am scared to death to trust a broody with my new babies, I wish I was giving them to my tried and true, 'Popcorn', but she has a brood to look after right now. :(

Cant wait to see your new babies !

That is very strange about those hens not laying...makes you wonder..too inbred? getting old? that is very strange..too bad too..Im sure they were amazing..seems its always the important ones..the only experience I have had with that is when they are getting old..

They are HERE!!!! I am so jazzed! I didn't get pics yet as they are warming up. They look okay, one had a eye sealed shut, so I gently eased it apart and it seems okay now. They weigh half of what my BBS weigh… I guess the Partridge run smaller. and they seem a bit 'leggy'. Pics later…promise.

I just re~read this. I missed the 'didn't lay too often' part. Now I get it….um I think. Such a shame, always the best birds with the problems, or the raccoon gets.. ect.
