well being so far north we do burn wood to heat the houseI second that. DE is a dessicant and nothing more unless you use the type for pools which will harm your birds.
A much better dust bath is wood ashes. At my old house I had a "burn pile" spot that I'd burn wood in, and after it all cooled they LOVED dust bathing in the ashes. Never had mites or anything. But Dragon Lady's regimen is really better. Just saying, if you refuse to use the Permethrin, at least let them dust bathe in wood ash.
i like it at about 80f in the kitchen most of the winter

so wood ash is no problem
i can add a litter pan of ash to each coop
& let them go at it
