The Legbar Thread!

I will be setting my first CCL for NYD. I have atleast 18 coming, from CJwaldon and crazypetlady. I've noticed yall talking a lot about the cream hackles...would yall show me the perfect color for that? I want to make sure I'm selecting my beat of best for breeding. Still so very new to this amazing breed!

I have some bad news on my legbars. Looks like my legbar hen is an egg eater. Her comb has been big and floppy for a month but every time I go out to check for eggs, there is an indent where she laid it and no eggs. Finally I stuck an egg in the pen with them and sure enough, the hen and the rooster both were able to break it open in a few minutes.

That is bad news. I've never had an egg eater stop being an egg eater. I would be inclined to remove the imbibers for fear others in the flock will pick up the habit.

Oh no. I've heard from some old timers that occasionally this happens if the eggs are soft or thin shelled (makes sense this time of year), since they want to keep their nest clean. So they might outgrow it. But if not, have you ever tried one of those roll back nests with the barrier so that the hen can't get to the egg?

I have to share pictures of my new trio that I got today. They are from J. Burton.
They were just out of the box, so a little timid.
"Vanilla Ice (Cream)"-because there is only one "Ice!"

Here he is again:

"Cream Puff"-look at her crest!

and "Sugar (Cream Pie)"

Congratulations on your beautiful little ones! Vanilla Ice looks even lighter than my Blue. Did Jon give you their hatch date? They look to be about the age of the pair I picked up about a month ago. I'm curious because I forgot to ask for their official hatch date.

Oh no!! I second the recommendation of roll out nests. I don't have any egg eaters but have a friend that does and she switched to them and it put a stop to it, simply because the hen couldn't get to them any longer.

Good luck!

I agree roll-out nesting box so that the hen cannot get at the egg. Here is also a device, designed to stop pecking but said to be able to prevent them from breaking the shell.

They can be obtained from ebay (ebayUK) and may be a good thing to have on hand. I just noticed this evening that Lily's has broken off or popped off by her wiping it...have been wondering if I should leave on or remove. She goes to a new home on Sunday!

ETA - Heather pointed out that I put the wrong link in there. Go to the above link and hit the forward arrow and voila -- the wrong link.
