Flying by the seat of my pants!
When Mathew came through, there was a church that did the same thing. It's one of those big fancy TV churches. They shared a couple of pictures of flooded rooms and made it seem like the entire building was trashed. The pastor (or w/e his title was, not sure of the religion) made public announcements that the church was going to need help, and was not able to help other out. A few people that attended the church exposed that the pictures where actually from the parking subterranean garage, and then posted pictures of the interior building that was not affected at all. The media ate it up, and the church was somewhat forced to open their doors.
Even after lying on TV, and making it look like the church was going to need financial help, the church's followers, still follow the "pastor."
It makes me furious to see people in power of any kind to put themselves on a pedestal. Us grunts are just as important as anyone else. Yet when tragedy does hit, take a stroll through those grunt areas. You'll be given food, shelter and the shirt of someone's back if that's what it takes.
When Charley came though we had a 3 day BBQ. Myself, and 2 other fellas brought out the grills and just cooked meat for anyone who had it but no way to cook it. One of our neighbors was a local bar owner who had electricity at the bar, but not at home. He opened his doors to anyone who just needed some AC, maybe charge their phone, and just have a dry place to sit. Before the sun was up, the chainsaws where running, clearing roads. NOBODY was less important than anyone else. Those grunts are the kind of people I like to surround myself with. We weren't exactly friends, but when the help was needed, it was there. You didn't have to beg to get it either.
