Awww calls are the cutest! But all my birds have to have a "job". From what I've read they are poor layers, but what do you think? also they are too small to feed my family
They are seasonal layers yes. I think they say somewhere around 80 eggs a year. Mine lay more than that I think. They have started laying again already but will take a break mid season.. Pick up again in the fall and lay until winter.

Let me remind you, people eat quail. And I'm pretty sure those delicious looking bacon wrapped duck breast where calls too. What about being cute? That's a hard enough job! :D
Yup.
More meat than a quail for sure.
Only one in that pic was a call duck. .the others were shoveler duck. But about the same size really.
And most of the eggs are the size of a Batntam chicken egg. So they can still have a job as far as that goes.
But if you choose to breed to standard you may find the actual bird worth more to sell than to eat.

I'm quite isolated where I live so would have no luck selling them. It sounds like they lay as well as the muscovies, which just isn't enough for what I want. I'm hoping to fase out the use of chickens all together here pretty much. The heat gets too much for them and they understandably stop laying. But the ducks do beautifully, I guess because they swim

What plans? being nosy here?
