There are so many beautiful color varieties out there. I'm a sucker for penciled turkeys :) This is my Phil :) According to the experts on Porter's turkey color genetics 101 Facebook page, he is a penciled fall fire.

Not necessarily. I don't think I've ever had this issue. I always raise the turkeys with chicks. But, then again, the turkeys tend to get moved around with other brooders as they grow to fit in with the bigger sizes and then when they go outside, they're put in seperate pens.
He is wonderful! Well they all are, but the big fella is very eye catching.
Of all the varieties I've looked at, the penciled ones are my favorite. They just look a bit exotic to me. Though I also like the simplicity of the Bourbon Reds too. Another one I found really attractive was the Tiger Bronze, and the Calico, and the Penciled Red Palm, and the, and the, and the... :D
When I went to Porter's web page, I was overtaken by the selections. It's the only time I thought doing hatcheries choice would be my best bet to find something (or a few somethings) I really like.

Just so I understand you. Are you saying you move them around to be with brooder mates more their size as they grow?

I am so excited a good friend and member here has found homes for my 4 draklings that Hatched here 10weeks or so ago. They will be going in twos to which makes me even feel much better! I love these boys and am so relieved they will be going to wonderful homes. Prayers answered. :)
That's fantastic!

I've actually had a lot of trouble just trying to give birds away. Everyone is all for it until it's time to pick them up. I still have the 2 Peking drakes that where supposed to go to that farm. The lady was "happy to help" till I tried getting her address to take them there. All of the sudden she stopped returning my calls... She also is a Serama breeder to which I am just enamored with...
Chances are she could have sold me some (more like a sure thing ;) ).
I ended up listing them here a couple of days ago.

The guy that was supposed to pick up jerkface never came to get him either...
I'm trying to stay away from "free" ads right now (it's way harder than I though lol) but I've got free birds from 3 separate ads. Every time I was more than grateful for the birds, and had no problem making a little trip to get them. No expectation of food, cage, or anything else. The bird was free, and to me that's a good enough deal. I offered to feed that rooster for a week at his place, and all the sudden he's not answering either...

Quails would be the easiest thing ever for a first time Hatcher. But if you can’t/don’t want to/ aren’t ready to keep quails yet, chickens are almost as easy. ;)
I'm not against quailby any means. Actually I would really like to have some, and I can imagine it would be quite easier to manage than turkeys. Although I'm a glutton for punishment have a massive addiction to anything with feathers at this point. ;)

They are both awesome ladies!!!
Thanks Quackiemomma! Everytime I look at Pip, she looks all that more like a proper lady, just with feathers and fuzz. :)
I too have been interested in getting some turkeys next time I get more birds! A friend of mine has tons of chickens and turkeys and said she would hook me up. She has a friendly one named Gary that loves to cuddle.
DO IT! DO IT! DO IT!
BYC is not the place for people with no willpower. I feel like a perfect example of that statement!

What kind of duck is that in your avatar? They are very pretty.

So, about jerkface...
I was tired of him and his bullying. I had him separated with a single hen who is also a bully. The 2 of them where getting along just fine, however their housing was temporary at best. The 2 storms we had where pretty heavy, so I put the 2 bullies back with the other bantams and guineas. I don't like the 2, but I don't want them to die because I housed them in conditions where the rain could have a serious effect on their health. I'd still rather them got to a home they can "flourish" in.

This morning I was doing my rounds, and found the white guinea was missing more feathers with a exposed break in the skin running down it's head and neck. As I approached them, jerkface started attacking the guinea. At this time I was just going to throw him in the yard and wish him luck with the hawks. Then he bit me, and tried to fly at my face with claws pointed at me. (I was bent over, and he about got to my face) I moved and he flew right out the door. I took one step towards him and he ran, much faster than I'm willing to. So I drew my CCW, took aim and dispatched him.

He could have been a great rooster in a different environment, but he was a threat here. It wasn't for a lack of trying to rehome him either. I asked about everyone I spoke with if they wanted him, offered food, and even a hen to go with him. Yes it was the bully hen, but those 2 did not fight at all.

Now I am down to 1 Bantam rooster, 1 AC rooster, and 1 Serama rooster. Well their all cockerels still... All 3 of them are generally sweet birds though. Don't tell my AC roo, but A'pollo is my favorite. His tiny little crow is so none intrusive that he lives inside and nobody minds hearing him. It's more cute than anything.

The bantam roo is not really that interested in me, but I've never seen him bully the other birds, or show aggression to me. He looks a lot like his mother too, and is the only offspring of hers to have the rose comb she had. As long as he's not the next jerkface, he can stay as long as he'd like.
