I was at our local feed store yesterday, and they had 5 breeds of chicks available, and guess what was the most expensive?...
Bared Hollands! All the chicks are $3.50, but the BH was $6.
If you didn't explain the rarity and the general price structure, I'd of thought it was a rip off.

No miss I did not... Doesn't mean I didn't want to though!
One of the members on a "show your rooster" page actually got some red phoenixes from his local TSC. So... I WILL be stalking them come here soon.
I'm surprised my wife let me take the debit card with me to these places. If I where her, I'd have cash, and it'd be for the exact purchasing amount. lol

Speaking of TSC. I know a lot of people here have had bad experiences with buying chicks from there, and most I'd say are legitimate complaints. However, at the store I go to, I do not think I'll have those issues. I will admit, most of their employees are simple there for a job, and there's nothing wrong with making an honest wage.

There is one person at the store though that is a chicken guru. Not only does she love them, but she worked as a livestock trainer for movies and commercial for ~20 years. Not just that, she super nice and loves to talk about chickens. My favorite quote from her so far "I get nervous leaving the chicks here. Nobody cares for them like I do." I believe her too. I've spent a few hours just chatting with her, she helped dealing with the cocci, and has remembered me from day 1. Actually I call ahead every time I go there, and if she's not working I go another day.

There are a couple of breeders in FL that have Barred Hollands. One is supposed to be close to the same quality as Suzanne the other not so much. Problem is that without a LOT of research, I don't know which is which. The best quality stock is at Rutgers where they were developed, but I have never heard of them selling them. They still maintain a flock though. Rumor has it that several years ago at the request of the conservancy, they provided breeding stock to three selected breeders across the country. But I've not been able to confirm the rumor.
