Dylan has her own "bedroom" (cage in a closet) so that she gets 12 hours of darkness. Long days trigger too many hormones for a nice pet. African greys are from the equator, similar area to where chickens evolved. Long daylight times make them (chickens and parrots) lay too much for good health, in my opinion. We take advantage of this for eggs all year by lighting our chicken houses at least 14 hours/day, but you know what happens to the chickens who lay continuously! Dylan is 25 years old, she lays 2-4 eggs per year, even with controlled lighting. But, she has not gotten egg-bound again, since I instituted an early bird-bedtime.

That’s awesome. My biggest worry is one my ducks or chickens getting egg bound. I’ve had 1 duck and a few chickens it’s heartbreaking. I’d just soon mine not lay so many.

For the pets, more dark time and less eggs will keep them healthier longer, I believe. My parrots vet agrees.

I can only do that in winter since summer they need windows for air. They are all only pets.

The birds here are currently going out at 7am and come back in at 8pm. The shack doesn't have any windows at the time, but does have an active ventilation.

There's a 444cfm extraction fan pulling air fron the rafters, and a 190cfm fan blowing in fresh air at ground level. Then there's acouple of wall mounted oscillating fans in there. It does a good job keeping the temp and humidity in check.

Mine come out at 7 am but my chickens start the ball rolling in the afternoon some starting in as early as 5, by 7 everyone is in for the night.

Dylan the Parrot goes to bed at 6:30 and gets up at 7:00 am, 12 1/2 hour night. It seems to work for her. No light in the closet, but enough ventilation for 1 bird. I have a window fan I am using for an exhaust fan that has a temp activation in our "Day" room. (Dylan really owns us & controls our lives). It comes on @ 75 degrees. Thinking about using an attic fan in the new bird "Palace". Nice amount of eaves that I am enclosing with wire. One section will have a large window/opening covered with wire that faces West, but has tree shade. Open on the South, which is the side in the photo I posted.
