Being born and raised in Florida I never got any further down into to Florida than Key Largo camping with my dh and kids way back in the early 70's hippy days. lol I love the videos and it really does look like a cool place to live but I am a mountain girl through and through now since 1977. It would be so cool to have chickens just wandering the streets of the town you lived in though. But I can do with out those hurricanes too.

I doubt I would actually move there, but sure it makes a nice fantasy. :D
I'd to much rather be in the mountains. I don't remember if I've mentioned it here yet, but we've already started looking at properties in SC. It's still going to be a few years till we move, but It's likely where we'll land. The plan is to find something ~30-40 miles from Greenville. I wanted to go to NC, but my wife's childhood friend is in Greenville.

I can only imagine what it's like to have local chickens. I still get surprised just seeing the local ducks.

I'm sorry about your loss too , Bob. Sorry I was a bit caught up with my chick and didn't say this before.
It's fine Chris. I lose a few every hatch, I'm just thrilled that those I've sold have done well. I have a friend with a theory to prevent it, but it's just really too complicated for me. You put the rooster's on a special (separate from the hens) diet 30 days prior to breeding. Put the hens on a special diet at the same time. Then bring them together on the hen's special diet for 30 days before collecting eggs. He says it dramatically improves hatch rates and survival rates.

I'd have to say let nature take its course. Guess I am too lazy. Plus I try and think if they don't make it then something may have been wrong in the first place.

Chris I do remember you saying about moving up to SC. I hope you can find just the perfect place for your family and critters.

That sounds interesting. I love reading about the different practices and observations from people that have been hatching and raising chickens for a long time. Some I think are a bit silly, but I've always been a fan of doing what works for "you."

The options there would make it much easier for me to pursue an actual farm lifestyle. For the same price we paid for a 3/2 on 1/2 acre here we can get 5+ acres with a considerably larger house.

I don't know if I'd call that lazy, but more realistic. Almost all of the local farms I've visited here have told me the same thing. Lol, if you think I ask a lot of questions here, you should see me when I go to buy birds. :th

If you'd like to read the recipes and instructions I can give them to you. It's just not practical for my setup.
