Well I would have to agree, however I do not understand.
Is it possible that what I'm seeing is just its crop contents? It did have a brownish color like the nutri-drench water.
Okay I retrieved the body, and after looking at it closer, I do no think it i mucus. What I saw this morning, was thicker that what is there now. What I am seeing now is about as thin as water, and has more of a red tint vs brown.

I suppose it's possible, but in your photo I don't see any mucous coming from the beak. It looks like it's coming from the nostril.
Any crop contents I've ever seen "spill" upon death, were from the beak and were clearly inside the beak as well. It was also food/water, not mucousy.
The red tinge is concerning.
Let us know what you find out with testing.

Hmm. I thought it looked to come from the nostril too.
Thank you for the help and suggestions. I'll update you when i get the test results, and thank you again for the link.

So I had another chick die. Thi time it was the BA. So out of about $300 I spent on the first hatching, I have 1 chick left... This is beyond discouraging. This makes me want to just get ride of the whole hatching ide and stick with ducks. Are chicken, chicks always so fragile? I don't get it at all, and I'm getting tired of just throwing money in other peoples pockets.

Or anyone else who might be able to help. The chick was fine last night as far as I know. It was eating and drinking, and gaining weight daily. It did have pasty butt, but it's vent was clean, and I was checking it about 6 times daily to clean it. When I got to it this morning it was still warm, and had a mucus coming from it's nostril. The drop on the fabric is from the chick. It was thick, but not quite snot thickness. I've been giving them none medicated starter feed, and nutri-drench in their water. I am open to any suggestions as to what could have happened.

so sorry, :hugs How old was it?

Well a necropsy is out of the question. I don't have $50 to spend on testing. I'm just going to have to ride this one out and either figure it out, or let nature figure it out. Why is the hell is a $3 bird costing me more than my pedigree dogs to care for?! This is so frustrating.
I'm about over chickens at this moment, and really think I should have just stuck to my original plan of raising ducks only. Not like there's not enough chicken pictures here for my enjoyment...
Think I'm going to take a break from the forum for a couple of hours. Thanks for the suggestions folks.

The last chick that died here died from pasty butt. There were some problems during hatching and it looked as if there may have been some internal organ damage. I did do a bit of a necropsy but the organs aren't well enough developed to see any problems is what I found. I expect someone who does necropsy on baby chicks regularly might have discovered more
when doing chick necropsies first thing I check Is the yolk.
