Our Indian Runner 'Fish' is a blinkin' blast! He likes to duck his head and chase my little foster dog (she likes to be chased and when she's done running she'll stand her ground or go inside). I let my daughter (15) raise our first two and I am raising our second two. I was hoping for a boy and a girl but my first set got 2 boys, and sexing them is difficult, embarrassing, and traumatizing - not to mention how the ducklings feel.
I don't rush to pick them up, I feed them out of my hand or out of my lap, and they come to me to get snuggles. My daughter likes to pick them up and it's caused a standoffishness with them and her. Now she only carries Chips and Fish follows if we have to manually put them anywhere. I usually just guide them (like inside for the night or into the garden if the weather is good)
I have a large kid pool (from walmart) that I fill 2 times a day out in the garden. It can get muddy - be prepared for that) but they LOVE LOVE LOVE It. Be careful of algae - there have been some really bad types going around lately that can cause all sorts of issues. (Especially if you have standing water)
I wish I could have a dozen - really they are wonderful. But my HOA won't allow me the ones i have. Thankfully I teach paint classes on the side and the HOA presidents wife is one of my students. She LOVES the ducks and so they are safe.. We have them listed as "exotic birds" after all 1 is from India, 1 is British and 2 are Welsh so.. see... exotic.. right?
