Top of thte morning to you all!

I let the older youngsters out for some free range fun yesterday. It was cute to watch them forage and flap.

Sent butthead on his way. He didn't bother anyone else while they where out today. :gig

The smaller EE took a nice dust bath.

I still need to do today's weigh in, but here's a good size comparison picture.

This is turning out to be a longer post, but I'd love to hear some feed back. What have your experiences been and so on. :)

Alright it's time to get down to the nuts n bolts of this bucket. It's time for the birds to start supplementing their cost. I'm not sure how I want to go about it yet.

Here are some of the flock stats that might be relevant...
22 ducks in total, 17 females all near the point of laying.
Drakes are 2 Pekin, 2 Ancona, 1 Runner.
Ducks are 8 F/w Runners, 1 Black Runner, 2 Pekin, and 6 Anconas.

When doing a search on CL for Runners and duck eggs, nothing comes up withing an hours drive. The ones that are showing up are F/W Runners going for $16, and a single Blue Runner drake for $30. I found one person with duck eggs for $8/dozen. When searching for Ancona ducks nothing comes up in a 50 mile radius.

Random picture from this morning to keep thing interesting! :D

The original idea was to use the ducks for egg production, but that's a lot of eggs. If I can't sell them then I'm stuck just buying feed. We can't eat ~100 weekly either. Plus the chicken flock has grown and will also be providing eggs. (ones my wife will actually eat)

Some ideas that are floating around in my head are to...
Thinning the duck flock down to 1 drake and 6 ducks. Terry (ancona) would be Poppa'flock, Mary and I both just love him. Then 3 each of the Runner and Anconas. Violet, the lady in black is staying. Terry and Violet are staying no matter what happens. This would cut down quite a lot of the potential egg production, but still give a decent amount weekly. If I happen to find a niche egg market, I can always hatch more ducks at that point.

Speaking of niche markets, there are a few places I am going to check before selling the ducks. There is a privately owned food market just down the street, and there is also a couple Vietnamese markets in Orlando. A Spanish bakery ran by a little old lady simply know as Grandma. If I could find a place to take the majority of the eggs, I'd sell them for a competitive price. If this could happen I'd keep both Ancona drakes, and all the Runner and Ancona ducks. That might just be wishful thinking. I wouldn't expect to make much money, but enough to pay for the feed would be nice.

The local feed store and TSC are not niche markets, but they do have community boards.

I don't think I would want to rely on something like CL to sell duck eggs on a regular basis. Even that route I'd imaging you'd have to find a couple regulars with the occasional random person wanting to know what it tastes like. I'm a little to antisocial for CL, and to be honest don't want a bunch of strangers over here.

I'm not really sure what to do, but it's time to either thin them out or supplement some money. I just don't really know how marketable ducks or their eggs are. Research time! Well actually I need to go to the feed store, then feed Jonah :love, gotta change a diaper in there, walk around the house till he finally gets tired, then goes down for his next nap. Then, I can do some research. :th
