Ms Brown was gracing us with her pressence again this morning.
She is right up there with Anne when it comes to being a peoples chicken. Even running a circular saw today she would come and watch me.
My FiL has nicknamed her. He's one of those fellas that is he says it once, that is it's name forever... "Leather Neck is back, Chris."

For those interested in genetics, I found something pretty cool out.

Na (genetic symbol)
Incompletely dominant. Turkens. Causes bare skin on the neck which becomes reddish toward sexual maturity. Heterozygotes show a small tuft of feathers on the neck above the crop, which is almost missing in the homozygote. The Na allele is associated with increased tolerance for heat, which is probably due to the 30% reduction in overall plumage for heterozygotes and 40% for homozygotes. Na is also associated with a small increase in meat yield and lower body fat content. An increase in embryonic mortality of up to 10% is attributed to Na.

So my birds are heterozygotes. I would prefer them to be homozygote, but it's no biggie for now. The trait is incomplete dominant which is interesting. This is what is means.

Incomplete dominance is an important concept in the study of genetics. It refers to a circumstance in which the two copies of a gene for a particular trait, or alleles, combine so that neither dominates the other. This creates a new phenotype or set of observable characteristics caused by the interaction of genetics and environment. In short, incomplete dominance is when neither gene is fully dominant, and the result is a brand new trait.

This could bring on some interesting phenos using the BBM roo. The birchen trait seems to be dominant. Then with the AC roo over NNs, the black skin trait is sex linked. With the Dampierre, the hens have crests. Oh the possibilities of patterns, and shapes to look forward to.

I got colored leg bands on the ducks today. I'm marking the boys in blue and girls in orange. Catching 22 ducks is one heck of a work out, so in the morning I'll get the remaining 5 before anyone leaves the shack. I caught a couple of angry claws too.



Violet has a small buff patch on her chest. When I first noticed it, it scared me. She was laying down, and as she stood up I saw it, and thought something was wrong with her crop. Thankfully it was just a few feathers.

Pineapple is coming down, literally. Going to prop it up in the morning and cut it down this weekend.

This afternoons dust bath!

Good morning! How old are your EE Chris? Usually by 3 weeks I can tell a cockerel they are getting pink combs.
