Good morning y'all!
I'm running behind here, been dealing with some less than fun times the last few days.
So I've been looking for a Blue Birchen Marans source besides GFF. I just can't afford that place. I'm trying to steer clear of ebay, so my options are very limited. That's the problem with having a taste for steak but a budget for bologna...
So... My plans are being put in a different direction. Maybe. There is a fella about an hour away that breeds French Golden Cuckoo Marans. Bases on the images, they are healthy, pretty, and large.
So....
Sully over a Golden Cuckoo hen creates sex linked chicks. Same thing for Ollie the Orloff.
That opens a few doorways to projects. I'd be able to make a chocolate egg laying sex link. I do expect some work to be done as I don't know the color grade Sully would contribute to the eggs. However, people love sex links, and if I can corner the market on dark eggs, it's a potential win/win.
In regards to using Ollie as the dad. I've read that Orloff x Marans makes a decent meat bird. I know we don't chat much about that here, but it in itself opens up some options. First off, supplementing our diet with a better quality meat with a budget friendly source. Potentially selling meat. My wife's boss is well connected with people who'd pay a premium price, and already agreed to help me network. Another potential source of income would be to sell the feathers, particularly the hackles. I've seen Black Copper pelts going for $5-10 each. With the barring, and coloring I'd think there'd be a market, even if it's a small one.
Profiting is not the main goal, but being more self sustainable is. The above ideas fit my budget, gives me a chance to work on some breeding projects, still let's me have a mixed flock, and some "rare" breeds to enjoy.
This is so far from my original plans and goals... Sometimes you've just gotta adapt ro what your able to do.
Anywho, that's the new ideas. I really wish the BB Marans was easiest to obtain, but there's always another day.
