I've come up with an idea! One that benefits me and keeping local money in the local economy, even if just a bit.

I've got to go to the fed store today. Our local shop is a mom n pops place that does a good job taking care of their regulars. At the moment they are ordering chicks from Ideal, but during season they source their chicks locally. Side note, I'm in the runnings to be one of those sources this spring, chicks and eating eggs.

Since I know where and what they order, figuring out the price and profit is pretty easy. Which makes negotiating easy. With the price of the eggs available to me, turning a small profit would be easy too.

I've seen the stock that's maintained, and it's breeder/show quality. The feed store only orders 15-25 of any particular breed. Normally having 2-3 breeds on hand during season. Currently having 1-2 breeds off season. Ideal's price breaks are 1-24, 25-49 and so on. So.... 1-24 D'uccle cost $4.41 each. I can hatch 22 if I have 100% hatch. That works out to be $22 invested, with a selling price of $97.02, and a profit of $75.02.

That's a perfect world math equation, but $75 gives me plenty of wiggle room to negotiate with. Even if I do not charge less than Ideal, the quality of the stock also gives negotiating room as to why it's worth it. Not to forget the saving of shipping cost. I'll just estimate that at $0.50-1.00 per bird.

I'll be chatting with the shop owner today. Worse he can say is no, and I'll buy my feed and say thank you.

Aren't they sweet birds. Well the rooster we had wasn't he would attack as soon as you turned your back and he was also out to kill Rufus so he ended up chicken and dumplings. Beautiful pair Chris.
They really are. So far the cockerel has been a pretty well behaved young man. He's going to be freaking huge too. I'm excited to see what sexes the chicks are. Shouldn't be to long. One I'm pretty sure is another big male, it towers the others
