Hey.. my Sis and Bil don't feed their ducks anything but dog food. . But They do free range all day.

They seem fine and dandy to me. They have less sickness and fatalities than I do and i buy the high dollar stuff. 💁🏼‍♀️
I would not hesitate to feed them dog food too, but what i have hound here so far is too coarse and wouldn't fit through a common duck's throat. - Of course Blanca Duck with her Oil-Pipeline throat would be fine, but i'm afraid the other's would struggle.
The other ting is that too much protein without feeding an equal amount of fiber makes their poop even more disgusting. Ever heart/seed a duck f@rting? 🙊 🙉 🙈

My Hubby had a duck growing up that lived with the dog in the doghouse outside and ate only its food. It was free ranged and lived for years along side of it as they were best friends. It never had any health problems and was perfectly fine. Of course being free ranged it was getting bugs and grass and other things besides the dog food too.

According to the Wokepedia, »Cobalt is an essential mineral for mammals…«
-> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobalt(II)_sulfate#Health_issues
But maybe its spelling mistake and Cobold was meant? 😜

Or even COBOL ?? (I think we're both from the IT tribe?)

Anyway....
still some green here with the solstice just around the corner
note the orange feet on our trans-drake :)

The free ranging makes a big difference. They let their birds out from dawn to dusk. So I'm sure they find everything they really need. I only let mine out in the afternoons when i am home. I have noticed they eat less feed when I can let them out daily.

Oh yeah. These cayugas sound like their back ends are blowing out sometimes. Especially when it's rained and they have found a lot of earthworms to eat.

The free-ranging makes all the difference! I see a big difference in feed consumption between the frozen-ground season and the ground being dug-up by dux season. Recently i discovered that the dux are foraging chestnuts from under the chestnut trees, very much to the dismay of the squirrels.

Yes, still working in the IT-business… Back in the days we called the COBOL programmers Cobolds!

I bet that Trans-Drake is currently not laying eggs and storing a lot of orange colour in her legs and feet. Once the real drake arrives, her eggs will be the best with large orange yolks. One of the reasons why i feed Cabbage and kale to the dux is that all those anthocyanins in there will end up in the yolks and make them more delici- and nutricuious.

I can't wait for the winter solstice to pass, then every day will become longer again. Somehow it feels like somebody has stolen ½ of this year from me...
