~The Sapphire Gem~ A Breed's Chat Thread

Pics
hello all, i thought id add a little tip about identifying the sex of a chick that i found to be pretty reliable. if they have a grey patch on top of their head, like where a comb will come in, it is probable they are little roos.
Also i have a lovely year old Little Hen who looks just like a Sapphire gem but she lays blue eggs can anybody tell me what she might be I've been trying to upload a pic but it won't let me I'll try again later. Thanks all your girls are beautiful

I also found a early sexing trait that seems pretty reliable starting around 2-3 weeks the ring around the eyes of the males with the barring gene starts to lighten up. The pullets will stay black or dark. Here are some pictures to help understand what I’m saying. The first one is a barred rock next to two sapphire pullets. The barred rock has the yellow ring around the eye. I believe this is a barring trait which is why only the male sapphire gems will have it. Young male sapphire gems will start to get a lighter or yellow ring as in the second picture (I put a pullet picture in to compare with). Also starting around 5 weeks or so the feet will either darken up for pullets or start to lighten for roos.

My older Sapphire Gem, Silvry, has been the undisputed Queen since I got her. My game hens will run the big Light Brahmas, and stand off my dogs. They treat her like royalty, and copy her every move, when she allows.
