I don't fully understand the respiratory system in birds, but was think that a sling might not be a good idea for such a large bird because it might put too much pressure on his air sacs. I have these two picture, but cannot find the link I got them from.
i was thinking about this too, but him laying on them cant be much better :/

Kathy has a good point about the pressure on the air sacs, but also the pressure points, such as the breast bone (keel) and legs, as well as the wound site can be damaged if always lying in the same position. The more his position is changed the better. The memory foam dog bed was a good suggestion if padded to keep it clean and dry. I keep old towels that can be bleached and laundered for things like that. Puppy pads are good, but a contractor garbage bag would be thicker for waterproofing. Here are some of the larger homemade slings seen on the internet:

I know we are reaching here.... but what about a sling with some springs or stretch? Like a baby bouncy chair? So when he is able to put a little pressure on his legs, he could relieve the weight, but also have the support for just short periods.

ETA - but I guess that's the point of just barely reaching the ground.... never mind.

I keep envisioning a 50 pound turkey in one of those baby things with the wheels trundling about.
